Question / Help Need help upgrading CPU for streaming

Hi,

I want to stream using 2 computers. I already have the computers one gaming and one for streaming. My streaming PC was used before as a gaming PC until I recently built a new gaming PC. So I decided to turn my old gaming PC into my streaming PC.

The question I have is what CPU is a good upgrade for my current CPU in my streaming PC. The CPU is a Intel Core i5-760 Lynnfield 2.8GHz. I tried streaming with it but I want to use a better preset in OBS and use "faster" instead of "very fast" because it looks much better. But my CPU usage goes to 100% on my streaming PC even though I am not playing a game just streaming my Gaming PC on it.

So what CPU would be a good upgrade for a i5 760 and that can do lower presets like faster and fast in OBS? I also don't want to upgrade to a CPU with a different socket that requires a new motherboard. I am looking for the best CPU for the current motherboard on my streaming PC with a socket LGA1156

Thank you.

If its x58 chipset with an updated bios often you can find a hexcore x5650 (12 threads) for around 100-200. anyway, I personally use an x5690 overclocked to 4.5GHz.

My motherboard on the streaming PC is a ASUS P7P55D-E Pro and its chipset is Intel P55. So I don't think that CPU will work.

You're thinking of the LGA 1366 socket, which is Bloomfield (1st-gen core i enthusiast series). This guy should be on LGA 1156, making his best CPU the i7-880

See above for best CPU, but note that you will benefit greatly from a change in motherboard and CPU

Yeah I know changing motherboard would be best but I spent most my budget on my gaming PC. How much of a difference do you think the i7-880 will make when it comes to streaming different presets with obs? I'm looking to do faster instead of veryfast. Do you think the CPU usage wont go to 100% if its just streaming my gaming PC?

Also how about the i7-870 2.93GHz?

Depends on the settings you're trying to use. I'm on an i7-920 and I can't run 720@30 on anything slower than Veryfast without capping cores. To be fair, that's with game overhead and a few other CPU-biting processes too.

You'll probably have to overclock it some, but it should not be particularly bad especially in a streaming PC scenario. I can't exactly remember if that CPU is overclockable though, or if only the i7-880 is. 1st-gen consumer core i series weren't a whole lot stronger than core 2 duo, and while hyperthreading tech does help a lot with OBS, it's a far cry from even 2nd gen (Sandy Bridge) or later chips. But you should at least be able to handle faster.

Thanks for your input and sorry for late reply. So I decided that i will get a new motherboard. So I was looking at the cheapest option of a motherboard and CPU combo.

So how will the i5 3470 and the msi B75MA E33 fare?

to be fully honest 1st gen i5/7 are actually quite bad for streaming if you are spening money go ahead and buy actual hardware would recommend going with at least ivy bridge if not even haswell and if you cant afford e.g. an 4790k or 4770k go with an xeon e3 1230v3 but dont spend money on anything below it will just be a huge waste in the end
