As my name suggests im not as tech savy as some of you on here :)

i have a few questions about the best cpu for streaming, i should note i only stream console games, not pc games so all i use my computer for is browsing the internet and alot of streaming, my questions are

1) what levels of cpu correspond to what levels of preset? so what cpu do you need to move from veryfast to fast preset? i ask this as my upload is very bad so have to stream in lower resolution so need every boost to quality i can get

2) just for streaming what is more important, cores or clock speed? for example 4 core amd at 4ghz vs 4 core+4 hyperthreading intel at 2ghz (made up numbers obviously)

3) are hyperthreading cores the same as normal cores ? for example 8 core vs 4 core + hyperthreading

4) where do mobile cpu's stand ? is a 4 core i7 mobile as good as an i7 desktop or more like an i3 or something ?

5) any other tips regarding hardware to improve stream quality ?

thanks in advance for any help

1> The slower the preset sounds, the more cpu usage the preset requires. Veryslow and Placebo are the two most cpu intensive, and superfast and ultrafast are the two least cpu intensive

2> A combination is important.

3> No. 8 physical is better than 4 physical with hyperthreading. The AMD chips that claim to be 8-core are actually 4 with hyperthreading.

4> Mobile i7 are about equal to desktop i5.

5> Don't try to stream at 60fps. It takes between 50% and 100% more bitrate to maintain picture quality. If you're streaming to twitch, you don't have the bandwidth to do it.

cpus correspond with presets counter-linear so, the lower the preset the faster cpu you need. but that all changes depending on the movement and scene complexity of the stream, not including the resolution makes a huge impact on preset as well.

so your question cannot be answered easily without:

stream resolution (360p, 540p, 720p, 1080p) and stream frames per second (commonly 30, 48, or 60)
type of games (side scroller, fps, third person, and amount of foliage of the game)
amount of $ you are looking to put into a CPU
and upload speed you plan on using for your stream (maxes at 3500 kbitrate which 5Mbps upload is recommended), second, some viewers have a hard time watching 3500 bitrate so might consider between 2000-3000.

recommended starting point for any stream is
1280x720 30fps 2500 bitrate and then lower the preset to 80% cpu usage at max movement in game.

my upload is around 1mb so i use 1000kbps bitrate 480p 30fps and i stream call of duty, i want to use the lowest preset possible to make up for the low resolution and improve quality, just not sure how far up the ladder of cpu's i have to go in order to find one that can run the really low down the list presets

presets are less effective at lower bitrate. and if you have 1Mbps upload, you should use no more than 750 kbitrate. I say this because games can lag or stream can skip if you saturate the upload.

again, I cant help you unless I know what cpu you have and what you are looking to get.
