MP4 and MOV files will not save after editing.

I've been using my Macbook to record some online classes I'm teaching. After I finish recording I open the file in Quicktime to trim the start and finish, however it then refuses to save just saying 'The operation could not be completed'. I have tried with MP4 and Mov but get the same reaction to both.

When I chose my file type I saw the warning about it being unrecoverable if the file cannot be finalised, but as far as I'm aware there's no power loss or other problem when I finish recording to cause this.

I have go round it by uploading to YouTube then downloading again, which fixes the problem but is inefficient and time consuming. Is there something I'm doing wrong with my recording settings that could then be causing the problem in Quicktime?

I typically use HandBrake for this. You can tell it how many seconds to trim of the beginning and end. Also, when I use Quicktime to trim a clip, I don't use "Save", I use "Export"
