Question / Help Monitor with 16:10 aspect ratio and stream. Which settings are best?

Hey!

Today I was wondering about aspect ratio. My monitor as 16:10 aspect ratio with max resolution 1440x900. Right now I can't change my monitor to 16:9. All we know that standard for streaming is 1280x720 which is 16:9. So please tell me what settings are best for me?
- Should I stream with custom resolution in OBS (video tab) 1280x720?
- Or should I just downscale resolution from my base 1440x900 to 1152x720 (1.25 downscale)? If I should use downscale option. Which settings I should use - bilinear or lanczos?
- Or maybe I should do something like that. In video tab in custom write "1920x1080" and use downscale option to "1280x720"?
Guys what do you think about it? I'm asking because we know that Twitch force streamers to use 16:9 aspect ratio.

My PC:
CPU: i5 4670K not OC. My luck is so big that my CPU sux in OC :/
GPU: Nvidia GTX660 OC version
RAM: 8GB 1600 MHz Crucial Ballistix
Motherboard: MSI Z87-G43

You could just live with the black bars on the side.
I think if you set different aspect ratio, OBS will crop the image, which is pointless.

If you had a 1920x1080 setup I'd say just switch your games to 1080p, but you've got a low res monitor, soo..

What's stopping you from buying a new monitor? Your hardware can push 1080p in games just fine. No 120Hz 16:10 displays (over 1680x1050)? Don't have any money left?


And no, Twitch doesn't force us to use a 16:9 ratio. The player default aspect ratio is 16:9 and most people use 16:9 monitors, but if you fullscreen the video things show in their proper ratio on supported displays. I'm fighting with trying to stream at 1080p on a 21:9 monitor, may just end up streaming at 21:9 and putting it in the title; cropping is a bother and I refuse to lose the extra screen space (FoV).

Hmm so what you recommend me? Streaming with black bars or make in video tab 1280x720? What about buying a new monitor? I don't have money for new monitor right now. I'm saving money for 120 Hz 23"/24" :)

If your monitor allows it, I suggest you create a custom resolution of 1440x810 and use it while streaming. You'll see black bars on top/bottom but most of your viewers won't. If you don't know how to create a custom resolution, it's pretty straightforward for NVIDIA cards.

As for the OBS setup, if you wish to downscale to 720p (recommended) you can easily do that in the new MultiPlatform version by setting "Video->Scale Resolution" to 1280x720 and picking Lanczos filter. This will ensure optimal resize quality.

To get similar quality in the old version it's slightly more involved:
  • Set "Video->Base Resolution" to 1920x1080, downscale to 1.5 and filter to Lanczos;
  • Edit the scene until your sources fit the screen.
If you don't wish to downscale or don't care about downscale quality, then simply set OBS base resolution to 1440x810 or 1280x720, respectively.

Because of it's aspect ratio. If you can't change your monitor but want to output 16/9 you have to give up a few pixels on your screen (45 on top and 45 below in your case). I have a 1680x1050 screen but choose to play at 1680x945 so I can 'natively' stream at 16/9 without any cropping.
