Question / Help Low FPS/laggy recordings

Hi there,

Great software for the most part only I can't seem to solve this problem:

I'm trying to record a game (Gothic 1, Steam version).

1. The game WILL NOT be detected by any game capture software I own under any "game mode". So I didn't expect OBS to pick it up.
2. My only other option is to capture the window, rather than the game - I understand that this will lead to less FPS than game capture. However, I've been through the optimal settings and I'm wonder if somebody could share their expertise and let me know what I'm doing wrong? The footage looks really bad, it's laggy and looks like it's running consistently at about 15 FPS.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Post your obs log.

Also, Try crf=15 instead of crf=0

Hi,

I didn't know about the log files at all. I have uploaded my latest one and analysed it, it's basically telling me what I already know and things that don't apply to me.

"Late frames detected

49.38% of your frames are late. This means the frames are being generated later than they were needed, causing your stream FPS to drop. Late frames are often caused by slow sources such as monitor capture, slow video capture devices or by trying to run your stream at too high of a resolution / FPS.

If you are using a webcam, try to lower the resolution of it. If you are using monitor capture, try switching to game source or window capture. If you must use monitor capture, ensure Aero is disabled.

You can also try lowering the resolution or FPS of your stream if you have an older CPU.

See https://obsproject.com/forum/thread...ing-too-long-to-encode-read-this-first.23334/ for more information on how to resolve this issue."

Also I just tried 15 and not 0 with no difference,

thanks though.

You're using the local recording guide for settings, but:
1> You're using superfast instead of ultrafast. Ultrafast is the least CPU intensive x264 preset.
2> You're using crf values determined to be far too low for regular use. 15-18 is in the range that is bordering on visually lossless without actually having the cpu hit that using x264 lossless introduces in OBS.

Changing back to Ultrafast did seem to help but the x264 changing didn't seem to change it too much. I'll just keep playing around with it.

Thanks for your help,
