Looping white noise

I've been using OBS for a few weeks now to digitize old VHS tapes. Working great. Today, however, when I open the program, before any video recording is happening, OBS will start looping about one second's worth of white noise, getting louder and louder with each second. It's clearly a loop of one second, not just pure white noise, you can hear it. What's really weird is that if I start recording a tape while this noise is happening, the actual recording is fine, not affected at all. I've tried rebooting the computer completely, and I haven't touched any settings recently.

The noise begins inauble, taking ten seconds or so before I can hear it. The sound is clearly cumulative, which is why it is getting louder every second it loops. While it only happens when the dongle is plugged in, it does not matter if the VCR is on, or even plugged into the dongle. I could not stop or affect the sound in any way by messing with settings in OBS - only exiting the program stops it.

This is a Surface Pro 7 plugged into a dock, and I have a video/digital USB dongle plugged into it. If I unplug the dongle, the sound changes, popping in and out, but it continues. If I start OBS with the songle not plugged in I don't experience the problem. As mentioned, this has been working without a hitch with constants use for a few weeks now.

Any idea what's going on?

Please post a log with your issue! Here's how...

OBS Studio creates a log file each time you run it which contains very useful diagnostic information. Without a log file, it's much harder for any support volunteers to figure out problems and your post may be ignored. To upload a log file, go to the Help menu > Log Files > Upload Last Log...

And yes, auto-ducking does appear to be activated, if that is the feature labeled "Lower the volume of other apps when Narrator is speaking"

Looks like you're using two or even three audio devices at once with different samplerates.
Try to follow hints like here: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/video-lagging-behind-audio.69044/post-296015

There are even more hints, for instance to disable all devices not really used. If you can omit the audio part of the video converter dongle, try to use your Focusrite device as input for the VCR.

The VCR has to plug into the dongle, so that's the route for collecting audio as well. I disabled auto-ducking and that seems to have solved the white noise problem! Thank you! Now I am getting no audio at all while ripping the video, though it is coming through in the actual recording.

Check your monitoring device in the audio-settings in obs and ensure in the advanced-audio tab that monitoring is set to "monitoring and output".
