Question / Help Just Making Sure - Please look at my log.

Just so I can confirm my suspicions that my streaming problem is being caused by my Internet connection, can someone look over the log below and see what is causing about 20% dropped frames nearly every time I stream.

Obviously, if there are any other issues you see, please point those out too. :)

What kind of internet do you have, what is your bitrate set at?

If you are having problems and are using a laptop, see this thread for advice.

If you are using SLI or Crossfire, you may need to disable it for compatibility with OBS.

Dropped frames detected
21% of your frames were dropped due to poor network conditions. Frames are dropped when data can not be sent fast enough to the server you have selected. This is caused by trying to stream at too high of a bitrate, or by the streaming server you selected not being able to accept the data at the rate you are sending.

Try switching servers, especially if you are using twitch.tv. As a test, you could also try streaming to a different provider to check whether the problem is on your end or not.

Note that some ISPs will temporarily increase your upload speed at the start of a transfer - if you only start to drop frames after 30 - 60 seconds, your ISP is likely doing this and you will need to use a lower bitrate.

Finally, if you are using a wireless connection, keep in mind that interference from other radio sources can cause your connection to stutter and drop frames. A wired connection is strongly recommended when streaming.

My Internet connection is 20mb down/2mb up cable with TimeWarner. I used "jtvping" to determine the best server. But not tried any others. I've set my bitrate to 2500 as suggested by Twitch for the 720p stream.

Last night was the very first time that I've streamed, so I just used what I found for settings. My concern is that the 2mb up speed is the primary problem. If it is, then I'm probably done streaming as the next step up in speed from TimeWarner is out of my budget reach.

2500 is more than 2mb, that's 2.5mb. So your connection should not be able to handle that. You always want to stay a bit below what your connection can handle, definitely not above it.

720p should still be possible if you set it to around 1500kbps in stead. Depending on what game you are playing. If it doesn't look good, you could downscale a bit more, and just stream at a lower resolution.

So tonight I dropped my bitrate to 1800 and, as far as I can tell, had 0 dropped frames. I did however experience two weird things:

1). When I first start the stream, the game (Starcraft 2) minimizes itself. It's still running, I can switch back and everything is fine...except for the 20-30 seconds of black screen at the beginning of the stream. (This is not a big issue for me. Just wanted to bring it to the developer's attention. Because it happens everytime I start to stream.)

2). The one issue I do have is that about 10 minutes into the stream (time varies), the stream crashes. OBS recovers, but it lags my computer out and breaks the stream. After the initial crash, the stream was solid and, to my eyes, worked very well.

1. How do you start the stream exactly? That generally should not happen. But if you for example have OBS sitting on a second screen, and you click the start streaming button, then yes, you are clicking outside of SC2, and it will minimize itself. In that case, you could consider using a start/stop stream hotkey, so you don't have to exit the game to start/stop the stream. If you are already using the hotkey, then I don't really know why that would happen.

2. What do you mean by crashes? Does OBS crash, meaning it closes with an error message, this is generally what we refer to as crashing. Then you would have multiple logs. Or does the stream disconnect, meaning it just stops streaming and starts reconnecting? This might have several causes, but is usually related to connection issues. Or is it something else? The log you posted doesn't show anything related to a stream stopping unexpectedly, or any connection issues.

I have SC2 running fullscreen on my left monitor. I have OBS and a few other things, like a browser, etc., open on my right monitor. I have OBS setup to start/stop streaming when I hit the F11 key. I will be in SC2, getting ready to start a mission or something and hit F11. SC2 will minimize, OBS with start the stream. The webcam source will start, The "Game Capture" source will be black. I switch back to SC2 and then the game capture source will show SC2 and all is well.

What I mean by crash is the stream will stop. It's almost like I hit the start/stop stream hot key twice several seconds apart. Nothing actually crashes, in fact, given a few seconds (15 or so) OBS will start streaming again on its own. During the "recovery", my computer lags very badly - so badly that all of the action on SC2 will stop until the stream is once again running. After the recovery the stream runs perfectly until hit the start/stop stream hot key.

To be honest, outside of these minor hiccups, I'm quite pleased with OBS. When I reduced the encoding bitrate yesterday I was worried that my stream would look awful. I'm very happy to report it looks awesome. After the stream did it's start/stop "crash", everything was flawless for more than an hour.
