Question / Help Is there a way to show Steam Overlay?

I've been testing out OBS before I start streaming using the Game Capture and my Webcam as sources. I noticed that the steam overlay and notifications(friend is playing certain game) do not show up when streaming and recording. Is there anyway to show the steam overlay and notifications in game capture or using any other method at all? Thanks. OBS is the greatest thing to happen to me lately.

Edit: I should mention that I'm using Windows 8. The OBS help file says that Monitor Capture works great as long as the game is not full screen. Would Monitor Capture show Steam overlay and notifications in the stream/recording?

Monitor and Window capture would show it. I don't recommend using Monitor capture, but if you do, make sure Aero is disabled (on Win 7 and Vista). Window capture is the preferred method, with Aero enabled. But yes, you need the game to be in Windowed or Borderless mode to capture with either of those methods.

Monitor capture and Window capture are both very good on Windows 8, so no worries there. Just make sure the game is not in fullscreen mode and you should be fine.

Its a question of the point of hooking I guess. For OBS-MP we might see such an option in the future if jim finds time to add it.
