Question / Help Ingame FPS droping while i stream.

Hello there,

I am trying to start streaming all the games that i play. I have 2 monitors and i like to watch my stream on the second stream just to much sure it is running smoothly. The stream runs smooth and has a nice image. However, while i am streaming, my in-game FPS can drop to 2/3 FPS. e.g I will be playing league of legends with 100+ FPS, the moment a team fight starts, I can not seem to move as my FPS has dropped to 2/3. It is not just League of legends, it is Titanfall, Rust and other games that i try to stream.

The specs of my computer are as follows;

AMD FX - 8350 Eight-Core Processor 4.00Ghz
16GB Ram
60GB SSD (Which my OBS is installed to)
1.5TB HDD

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti
GRAPHICS ENGINE SPECS
CUDA cores: 1344
Base Clock (MHz): 915
Boost Clock (MHz): 980
Texture Fill Rate: 102.5
MEMORY SPECS
Standard Config: 2048 MB
Interface Width: 192-bit GDDR5
Bandwidth: 144.2

Not sure what all them specs are for on the GFX card, but it said this on the website so I posted it :)

It might be the game is not properly supporting 4+ cores, valve is usually good at that. They cant run their drm stuff for shit though.
It's probably your graphics card, OBS snags frames directly from that one and sends it to the CPU for encoding - My 8320 is performing like a champ when streaming.

PS: I'm quite drunk right now, dont take my for it if you can understand it.

I didn't really understand what you mean haha but atleast you tried to help out xD

Is there no settings I can tweak to stop my frames dropping while streaming? All my games I can run on ultra with no problems untill i stream.

I don't try to stream whilst playing games on ultra so I am struggling to figure out what is causing this frame drop.

I was just streaming a game of Titanfall without any FPS drop with my CPU monitor on my second screen. I noticed that the moment the game loaded and the stream was turnt on my usage went to 3.92 GHz. My maximum speed is 4.0GHz so I am guessing that the frames drop when my CPU reaches 4.0GHz. Is there a way i can take some of this strain away from CPU while streaming?

Ok I just realized I was wrong. When I am playing my CPU is at roughly 3.96/4.00 GHz. Then, it will drop to 1.30GHz and my game will drop to 2/3 FPS. I also noticed that on OBS it said WARNING: Taking to long to encode.

Hey i have the same problem. same specs to LOL Well the gpu and the cpu. If you fixed it, How??? Please explain. It would help out alot. Thanks!

Hello, I still have not fixed this problem. I was hoping someone would help me out but nobody has yet lol. If I do manage to get it sorted I will let you know.. could you do the same please :) thanks!

I would recommend to do a stresstest on your system while keeping an eye on CPU speed but more importantly Temperatures. It could be that your system gets too hot, streaming and playing a game is one of the most stressfull things you can do. And for security the cpu would then tune itself down until the temperatures lower itself.
The fix for that would be a better cpu cooler of course. In some cases it can also help to limit the game fps, LoL has a setting for that in the video options if I remember correct. That way a bit of stress is taken of the cpu/gpu.
If you need a good software for stresstests, use prime95 but check a guide that tells you a bit how to use it. And NEVER forget to check the temperatures of your CPU/GPU while doing this. The computer should turn off before overheating, but safety first. To keep an eye on the temperatures there is software like OpenHardwareMonitor and GPU-Z etc.

Ok so I done a torture test whilst keeping an eye on my GPU/CPU temp.

My GPU will stay 33/34ºC throughout the test. Bearing in mind I did not run the test for that long, I just got a general idea of what was happening.

My CPU on the other hand, Idles around 32ºc. When I start the torture test, it slowly rises to around 52ºc. When it hits 52ºc, my CPU speed drops from 3.92GHz to around 1.38 GHz. While the CPU drops, the temperature drops from 52ºc to 47ºc. It then rinses and repeats this which I guess is the same thing that is happening while I stream.

Does this mean my liquid cooler is not doing its job and its making my CPU have to cool itself? or does my liquid cooler kick in at 52ºc and cool the CPU down? I'm not sure what that means lol

Whats weird to me is that i used to stream at 480p 60 fps. I had a amd fx 4100. When i upgraded to a 8350 i am having these problems with a better CPU. Doesn't make sense, right? I think the problem is that the CPU has something the does not work with streaming because i get great fps when im not streaming. What im trying to say is that the amd fx 8350 has a problem with streaming. O yea i did the same thing with the stress test and i have the same results, and i have the basic fan with it too!

Another reason is that the cpu has shit cooling even with a good cooling system. idk if that makes sense or not lol

Hmm that temperatures are actually pretty fine, are you guys using this Cool'n'Quiet stuff by AMD? (Often a bios setting) Its pretty strange that it clocks down on 52° :/ but it could explain your problems.

I just checked now, I have coo n quiet enabled. Also, i noticed something called CPU Thermal Throttle that was enabled. Maybe that could play a part in this?

Ok so I done another stress test with both of them disabled. No difference :(:(:(:(.... I don't understand why its doing this. Aparently CPU Thermal throttle underclocks your cpu to a % that you set untill the CPU has been cooled. That sounds exactly like the problem I am having lol. So I thought ofc disabling that would fix the problem, but noooooo :(

Just done a bit of a cowbow job, Scraped the thermal paste off the AMD cooler that was unused and applied it to my liquid cooler. My CPU now idles at around 27/28c. When i do a stress test, it still reaches 54c quite quickly. Do i need to get fresh thermal paste and smother it? or is it not gonna change much? This problem is sooooooooo annoying its unreal.

Hi there..

First off i have the same cpu as you have mumblez2013, and i sounds really weird that you are having these problems. i stream titanfall also and from what i can see on my past broadcasts im not lagging or having frame drops.

AMD FX - 8350 Eight-Core Processor 4.00Ghz
8GB Ram
120GB SSD (Which my OBS is installed to)
2TB HDD
