Question / Help How to Record only a portion of a screen

Hey all. I'm trying to set up a new scene where I have an overlay displaying just a portion of a third screen. Basically I want to show a section of another monitor or window, but not the whole monitor or window. So, as an example, in this image you can see the overlay in the bottom left, but it consists of the entire window. I'd like to choose only the video area plus a bit of the area below the video displaying the video title and creator. Going full screen isn't an option because then I can't display the title and creator. Also, ideally, it would be a window capture so I don't have to have the window front and centre but instead could have it in the background yet still capture the material I need.

How would I do that or get close? None of the options available seem to allow for this. Thanks.

Unfortunately, the window manager in Linux Mint (and I'm guessing many other versions of Linux) uses Alt-drag to move a window and that action is intercepted before it gets to the app so this method doesn't work. Is there a workaround for this where we can enter pixel offsets in a dialog box or something?

You can change the Alt+Left mouse drag behaviour to do nothing instead.

In KDE's plasma window manager go to:

system settings -> Window Management -> Window Behaviour -> Window Actions
There you can configure that the Alt + Left mouse button does nothing, instead of moving the window.

I suppose (hope) that other window managers have the same option.

Hope this helped.

This is what I'm trying to work out as well. :-)

Ok I think I've worked it out...

You need to change the size of the video you are producing.

The only way I can see to do this is in Settings->Video. Then change the output and base resolution to be the size of the recording you want to produce.

Move the image in the preview window so that is being captured. You do this by moving the bounding box - the red box that appears around your source and which can be used to move and resize your source.

Hi!

sorry I'm quite new to OBS and I'm trying to figure out how to use it for basic recordings...
screenshot_OBSrecording.jpg

I manage to crop the part of the screen I want to record but for the video output, it is just set to a 16:9 ratio when I go to settings...
is there a way to customise the output size to match my canvas size?

I've tried:
Settings->Video : But the ratio is locked to 16:9 I can only choose from 1920x1080 or 1280x720 or 1536 x 864 etc
and right-click in the cropped out area to use: resize output (source size)

none of the above worked yet. when playing the video, my image is just floating in a black space

Any advice on how to fix this?

PS: see attachment I just want to record one photoshop window but I can't get rid of the black blocks on the side....:(

You can drag out the video like out normally would to extend it.

Use a Crop filter instead of the alt-drag, then you can right-click the source in the Sources list as 'set output size' which will set your canvas and output sizes to match the source size.

alt+drag to crop.
Other posts have indicated this is unlikely to work in Linux and have suggested changing in settings the way alt+leftcursor works. Dunno if this will work with every Linux distro, but in Mint, just replace alt with ctrl+alt. (Note: I am using Gnome.)
