so how do i take out all the white parts of my top overlay - sorry its probably a stupid question .

Software like Gimp, Photoshop and similar allow you to remove the white and save the file as a PNG with transparency.
Alternatively you could try to remove the white with the Color Key options of the Image source. But white might not be the easiest to remove.
Doing it with a PNG is definitely easier.
