Question / Help Help! I can't record properly

Hello!

I followed the instructions according to this:
https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-make-high-quality-local-recordings.16/

When I'm doing the recording, my game doesn't lag or anything and everything is perfectly fine.
But then when I open the recorded video, there are moments where the video pauses/stutters for a good 2-5 seconds. The audio goes on as normal, but the video is paused.

When I use NVENC, the problem goes away, but then the quality is reduced significantly, especially when I'm moving in the game.

Here is my log file:
http://pastebin.com/FHjmYuS3

Thank you guys!

Sorry, brain fart or I had your log mixed up with someone else's or something. Are you using any kind of frame limiter (e.g. vsync) in your games? What does CPU and GPU usage look like before you start running OBS?

Haha no worries.

i dont' have vsync on.

How do I check my CPU and GPU usage look like?

Is this how I check the usage?

EDIT: sorry all 4 images are the same thing

That works fine. You can see that even before you start running OBS your CPU usage is spiking into the 90% range, and your GPU is likely doing something similar, because without a frame limiter like vsync they just render as many frames per second as possible until there's a bottleneck. If enabling vsync isn't a palatable option because of input lag you can use a tool like NVIDIA Inspector instead. See if limiting the FPS to something more reasonable like 60 works better.

You also have the option of using a hardware encoder like Quick Sync or NVENC, but even those may have some performance issues if your system is maxing out.

Ohh I see. Is there a way to use my laptop to record and then use my desktop to play games? Kinda like a dual PC setup or something? My laptop is this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0146DD02G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00

You could use a USB capture device (ideally USB3), but if you're just recording I think you have enough options at your disposal to not really need to go that route.

Hmmmm.. But I don't want to reduce my FPS, because then there's no real point of having a 144hz monitor. How do I use a USB Capture device? Is it expensive? is it difficult?

Is there a way to set up a dual-PC in a way that one PC can play games and the other can record? Like my Desktop + Laptop?

Thanks!

Yes, this is how live-streamers who are popular do it (well, most of them); here's a tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqqU95c46pA

edit---

this requires a capture card.

Go to task manager, details, and right click anything using up too much CPU usage for option to reduce priority to allow other program more CPU usage. Maybe set OBS to higher priority.

When using NVENC or QuickSync as a record only, try using a lot more bitrate like 20000 Kbps. Those encoders don't support many options that x264 does.

Wow thanks for the video! That was super helpful. Do I get the same capture card as the video? (http://gamerzone.avermedia.com//game_capture/live_gamer_portable)

Or should I get something different? If I were to maybe look for a cheaper capture card, what kind of specs do I need to pay attention to when shopping for a capture card?

Thank you so much!

Well it depends on how trusted the brand is and the quality, if you're looking to achieve 1080p then an elgato HD60(or some cheaper alternative, I don't know) will do it, I'll try find another video on for example the top 10 best capture cards; oop, here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0LTKfu1DRw

So I got the Elgato HD, but I'm having trouble setting it up...

The video is recording, but there is no in-game audio... Anyone know what to do?

You must connect I believe a 3mm jack audio chord into the computer's sound output and into the elgato sound input.
