Question / Help Getting microphone to work

I downloaded OBS for the first time yesterday. I only wish to use it to record myself playing Kerbal Space Program so that I can put it on YouTube. I watched some tutorial videos on how to use OBS and everything seems to work fine. For some reason though, my voice does not get recorded. I have chosen the correct microphone in the audio tab of the settings. I even have a brand new headset with microphone that I know is working. I tested it in Skype.

I cannot understand why it won't work in OBS. Any advice on what to try?

Okay so being new to OBS none of that made any sense to me. What is exclusive mode?

What does this tell you? I'm guessing this isn't what you mean by a log. What sort of log did you mean?

Ah, High Definition Audio Device sounds a lot like its the default Windows driver. You should probably check if there are proper drivers for your soundcard available.
If you want to check the "Exclusive mode" first, thats in the Sound properties of windows, under recording, find your Microphone and open its properties, then on the last tab (advanced) you will see something like this:
izuf7fO9cNOg0.png

Make sure its unchecked as shown in the example. If it was checked and to be safe restart Windows then try in OBS again. If that does not help, try my driver suggestion.
Your manufacturer should normally be able to tell you what kind of soundcard you have and where you can get drivers.

The exclusive box was checked. I unchecked it and restarted my computer. It still won't work. I don't see how it can be the drivers though. My microphone is plugged into the microphone socket on the back of my computer which is directly on the motherboard.

The motherboard I am using is an ASRock H87 Pro4. When I got it I had it all setup by my flatmate who works in IT support so I'd be surprised if he set it up wrong. Surely I don't need separate drivers for the sound card on the motherboard.

Your motherboard has a 7.1 CH HD Audio with Content Protection (Realtek ALC892 Audio Codec).
Realtek chipsets have their own drivers. Not saying your IT guy did something wrong, but I would install the latest realtek drivers: R2.75 should be the latest according to http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
In most cases this will fix the problem and also give you more options on your onboard sound hardware.
