on the capture card i changed it to "use device audio" and "send to desktop" ...i have game sound. The stream has sound. but that "echo" or duplicate sound persists.
I just had to re-read the details on your setup in the OP.

The problem might be somewhere in:

"Headphones out from soundblaster to mixer."

If your headphones are going out from the PC to the mixer, then you are pretty much mixing in what you hear (game sounds) with the mic, which is being fed back to your PC.

ok. unplugged everything from soundcard and mixer, so all thats there is mic into mixer (its xlr so it has to go into the mixer) and then out to the soundcard. HDMI set as the sound, sound coming through monitor speakers. device audio set in OBS. OBS dashboard, mic still shows sound from mic even though there is no sound from mic, if i unplug the mic out from mixer to the soundcard. the mic audio goes away *sigh* ....so does this mean that i cannot use an xlr mic and mixer for streaming? i know other streamers do it, and its fine for PC games, it seems to be just console this happens on.

you are still creating a loopback with those speakers. think about it. game audio - hdmi to PC, speakers out. Then speakers out bleeding through your mic, in through the mixer to the PC. mute the speakers or put on headphones. Warning, you might still get a little sound bleeding even with headphones

no no...i muted the mic, there is no way the sound from the monitor speakers was picked up by the mic. You are right tho. It has something to do with the way the sound is being mixed. as soon as i unplug the mic out from mixer or the mic in at the sound card the "sound" on the OBS mic dashboard goes away.

Do you have it going in the line-in or the mic input on your sound card?

Mic in. The soundblaster z does not have a line in unbelievably. i did try it with the realtek onboard line in and mic in. same issue.

ok while i waited for you i did some experimenting.

all i have now is the mic, plugged into the mixer and then out from the mixer to the mic in on the soundcard (also tried realtek front panel and rear panel mic and line in)
earbuds in the front headphones in.

mic still shows game sound being broadcast. so i thought ok. maybe it IS the mixer. I plugged in a regular, usb mic into the front usb on the pc, no sound from monitor speakers. all sound through earbuds. guess what? Mic STILL shows game audio being broadcast from the mic, no matter what mic i use or connections i use.

this leads me to believe it is a windows 8.1 issue somewhere..or something in OBS i need to configure.

I just cant quite track down where your issue is. what happens when you dont have anything plugged in the speaker out from your PC? just curious.

is it possible that OBS is....confused? id really rather not, but i could just wipe it out and reinstall it and see if that fixes it.

So here's the thing, its gotta be something with the sound card or the mixer because when its unplugged it doesn't happen right?

uf you have the mixer plugged in but the mic not plugged in, does it happen? what about the channels on the mixer, are they all muted?

agreed. so the only thing plugged in to the mixer currently is the mic. if i unplug the mic either from the output on the mixer or in on the PC it stops. BUT when i plugged a USB mic into the PC (and disconnected the xlr mic from PC) and chose that as my mic in OBS. The issue returned. everything on the mixer is muted. even the main so there is no sound at all coming from the mixer. issue is still there.

Creative should have software to change that mic input to a line in btw, I dont think that is the issue, but might as well check.

It does, I'll see if I can make that work.

ok well...i just uninstalled and reinstalled OBS...i havent even added anything other than the start splash screen and the mic is already showing activity...even though there is nothing happening.

i even plugged the power to the mixer. still showing signs of activity.

disconnecting the mic from the soundcard directly is the only way to stop the activity.

plugged a USB mic into pc, restarted preview...showing activty. although it could be picking up the sounds of the pc fans.

Fixed! it was the mixer mixing the sound and kicking it back out twice. So, now I have headphones conncted directly to speaker out on soundcard. Use device audio as the audio in OBS. No more echo. Now i just have to get my volume levels corrected.
