Question / Help Game Capture Black Screen

I'll start off by saying: Yes, I did read the sticky that's on the forums regarding this.

I have a desktop running Windows 7, I had to reinstall Windows due to other issues. Ever since then, certain games won't game capture properly. All I get Is a black screen.

I have tried everything to resolve this.

- Installing the C++ Redistirbutable
- Disabling/Uninstalling GeForce Experience (and shadowplay)
- Restarting my PC, the game, OBS etc.
- Running everything as an admin (Steam, OBS etc.)
- Updated all my drivers and software before I even installed OBS

Thing is, it was working absolutely fine before I reinstalled Windows and it only does it on, to my knowledge, one game - Dead by Daylight. I've ensured the anti-cheat hook option is selected.

Does anyone have any ideas for a proper fix for this issue? I have literally tried everything at this point and nothing resolves it. I feel like something is missing from my computer to for it to work correctly, although it game captures other games (Windowed and fullscreen). I'm using display capture as a workaround, but it's not ideal. Please help!

Your game capture source is trying to hook explorer.exe, which is blacklisted. Try setting it to actually target a game executable, or use either its fullscreen application capture mode or its hotkey capture mode.

Ok, so I'm using a second scene to demonstrate this.

This is what the problem is then, as I AM trying to capture the game executable. http://prntscr.com/kc8phu
I don't even get the option to capture explorer.exe

As you can see, nothing is shown in the preview. http://prntscr.com/kc8px5
Note the dot in the top left corner of the preview. Also, I have to transform it so it actually fits to screen, nothing is shown when I do this either. http://prntscr.com/kc8q78

Window capture (to a certain extent) works, this didn't actually work before but it apparently does now.

This is what's going on in the current log. I have no idea why, in the last log, it was trying to capture explorer.exe as I never selected this. But it's changed since I got it to actually try and capture the game in question.

You're not running OBS as admin in either of those logs. I know you mentioned that you've already tried that, but please try that here, and provide a new log if it does not work.

It doesn't matter whether it runs as admin or not. It does the same thing. Seems like this is a waste of time when it could be fixed, with or without admin rights running.

I understand that it may seem that way, but these are troubleshooting steps to double check if the log shows any new errors or valuable information. It's usually better to take things one step at a time both to avoid confusion and to avoid writing essay-length instructions posts. The logs are generally more detailed and more reliable than written descriptions and screenshots. I'm reasonably certain that DBD can be captured with game capture, so what we're trying to do is determine what on your system is blocking it.

Just to confirm: is this a single GPU system? No SLI?

Please check for possible programs that may cause conflicts with game capture:
Conflicts with Game Capture: Other capture programs, Razer Synapse (disable heatmaps), graphics mods like ENBSeries and SweetFX, and any type of software or utility that displays an in-game overlay like EVGA Precision, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, TS3/Mumble overlays, Dolby Axon, Raptr, Overwolf, etc. If you use D3DGear it must be uninstalled completely.

Please also answer @Suslik V 's question about security software, as those can also interfere with game capture.

If you're not running anything like that (overlays, other capture software, security software), or you still can't capture DBD after disabling/uninstalling that, try setting the game capture source to capture the foreground window with a hotkey, and wait to press that hotkey until after DBD has fully loaded.

Try to make OBS Studio portable mode in different folder (https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/crash-with-«could-not-find-locale-ini-path»-when-opening-app-settings.82157/#post-346499).

By the way, any third party security software is running on your PC?

The only security software I run is AVG free, which I've run before when the game actually worked with game capture. I will try the portable mode once I stop streaming.

Yes, single GPU, no overlays or other programs which would conflict with it. This is a recently fresh installation of Windows 7. I'm assuming that I have to map a hotkey for this?

AVG (and Avast, I believe) have a Game Mode feature that is known to cause problems. Disable the Game Mode feature. If you can't find it, you can try disabling or uninstalling AVG completely to test if that is causing the issue. AVG sometimes keeps its components active despite being disabled, which is why I mention uninstalling as an option to test.

Yes, you would. The hotkey setting would be in Settings > Hotkeys.

No, those module failure lines are normal. If you don't have any conflicts or security software causing problems, then I'm out of ideas. I'm pretty sure DBD is capturable by game capture.

The only workaround I can suggest in the meantime is to use Window Capture, but you may have to enable Aero for that to work.

It is capturable. I've been able to game capture the game before I reinstalled Windows 7. Something is obviously missing from my clean installation of Windows for it to not work.

I guess nothing can be done about this then?

Like I said, before I did a clean install of Windows 7, DbD worked in terms of game capture. Now that I did a clean installation, it doesn't work. It must be something I haven't installed yet, like a driver or software, that would let the game capture properly.

EDIT: I just want to add - Yes, other games still work, such as drawful 2. Here's the log for that. https://pastebin.com/peDNTU8s

I don't know. This is an oddity to me that I don't know how to fix. Someone else may stop by with some bit of knowledge that I've missed.

The only other things I can think of are manually installing the latest drivers for your NVIDIA GPU from the NVIDIA website or trying to manual install/update DirectX. You could check dxdiag to make sure that DirectX is properly installed, though this should be automatically included with Windows 7.

Do you have SP1 installed? Do you have the Windows 7 Platform Update installed?

I have everything installed as above (and DirectX11). I will try a manual install of my nvidia driver now and get back to you.

Did a clean install of the latest nvidia driver, still doesn't help.

I think I'm going to do another clean install of Windows 7. I won't lost much data as I've backed most of it up. Maybe I'll be lucky this time around.
