Question / Help FPS Issue With Certain Games When Recording

I like to use OBS to record gaming and noticed that with some more sophisticated/newer games the FPS drops below 30, making for an unwatchable, choppy video. For instance, when playing Just Cause 2 on Steam, it is jumping around in the 18-30 area when I'm moving the character and camera around. I keep the game resolutions as close to 720 as possible, just want to keep it HD.

Here are my desktop specs:

  • Intel Core i7 4770 (3.40 GHz)
  • 16 GB DDR3 1 TB HDD
  • Windows 8.1
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 620 2GB
Everything in OBS is set to default for the most part and it even happens when I close every other application on my computer. Is there a better way to devote system resources in or outside of OBS to maintain a fluid recording?

I'm using Window Capture, as well, so screen capture isn't the issue.

Is it as simple as my new system from a year ago can't handle games from years ago?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Why are you using window capture instead of game capture?
I got used to using it because it always worked whereas game capture was spotty with certain games. It just became a habit. I'll give game capture a shot if that'd make a difference.

Yeah that worked a lot better. Forgot all about game capture after it didn't work for a few games and had been relying exclusively on Window Capture. I guess it's a lot less taxing on the compy. Thanks Harold.
