Can you make OBS save in other format other than *.flv?

Not in OBS Classic, no. Feel free to remux to any other container format you want, or use OBS Studio, or explain what you're actually trying to fix or accomplish with your questions.

I need it in either .avi or .mpg so my TMPGEnc program can read the videos.
It can not read a .flv or an .mp4 file.
In other words I want to capture computer screen and write to a format so I can put it on DVD.

OBS does not like .wav.
It looks like I am stuck with .mp4 file type.

MP4 is strongly recommended against, as it is a very fragile file format. Please do not listen to Kajuin. If OBS crashes (including on closing out the file, which is likely on larger MP4 recordings) then the entire recording session is irrecoverably corrupted. Recording to FLV is advised, and remux'ing from there to whatever format you need.
