Question / Help Fixing program distortion when speaking, and finding happy medium for audio settings.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read and possibly help me out with my audio issue(s).

You can go straight to the recording in which I describe and demonstrate one of the problems I am having.

Here is the link to my current OBS log.

First problem: When I speak through my microphone over a program's sound, the program's sound becomes distorted while my voice stays clear. This happens within games, Youtube videos, and I will assume any other program that outputs noise.

*edit- Perhaps I am improperly phrasing the issue. It's not the game music that is become severely distorted, it's this reverb sounding effect / aura when I speak over a program also transmitting noise. It almost sounds like there is a severely muffled robot voice layered right behind my voice.

Second problem: I am just having trouble finding a happy medium between my voice and program volume levels. Whether it be H1Z1, Guild Wars 2, Youtube, and etc. The microphone input(?) volume in OBS is set to 80% while the program input(?) volume is set all the way down to 10%. Even with that low setting I still can't find a good balance where the program volume levels are still quite loud. I've tried playing with the windows volume mixer but those levels never stay to the adjustment.

The microphone I am using is the Audio Technica AT2020 USB plugged into the back of my computer versus the front (if it makes a difference). My OBS Encoding settings are set to AAC codec, 128 bitrate, 48kHz, and stereo channel. My OBS audio settings are left as default with the correct microphone selected. I have a Realtek HD audio driver. The window's microphone settings are set to the proper microphone as default, the mic volume level to 50 , and exclusive modes turned on (so default settings).

I also have OBS' microphone noise gate enabled to eliminate background typing and mouse clicking.

I must be missing something I hope as I have tried a variety of combinations and then proceeded to test record. Please help me fix these two dreaded issues! Thank you <3

Bump.

I've been trying to fiddle around some more with the settings today but I have had no luck. Definitely hope to get some other input into this matter.

Update #2. I tested this dilemma with my logitech c920s webcam's microphone and am still having the same issue of program audio distortion when speaking over it but voice audio remains clear.

When you listen to my voice over the games background music, the music turns into a muffled aura for lack of better descriptive words.

I would say the distinction might be a bit more clear with headphones on.

I'm still not getting it, even turned my headset up all the way (and listened multiple times).. I'm not saying there isn't anything wrong but that, whatever it is, it seems to be rather unnoticeable on my end.

Hmm that is quite odd. Perhaps I am improperly phrasing the issue. It's not the game music that is become severely distorted, it's this reverb sounding effect / aura when I speak over a program also transmitting noise. It almost sounds like there is a severely muffled robot voice layered right behind my voice. That sounds like a better description.

I'm hoping someone else can hear the problem I uploaded to Soundcloud. I still haven't been able to figure this layering affect.

Are you monitoring your own voice at all? And can you hear the effect in your own soundcloud recording? On a different system/phone/device?
What I think is happening is that you have a device (either mic, or stereo mix or whatever) also playing on a different device. Because it sounds fine to me, and im super picky about audio issues :P

I would say your AT2020 already has a bit of reverb like you're in a big room. And also make sure EVERY audio device is set to 16/24bit 48kHz if thats what you're using

As for the volumes automatically adjusting, I had a mic which had AGC (auto gain control) activated
