Question / Help First Time User - Black Screen

Hi folks,

OK, I am here after running into problems with an alternative capturing software I was recommended to. I am trying to capture for first time a game being played.

Now I am not very clever at capturing game, and I only really play COD, and namely Ghosts (yeah I know I know ! ) but am 40 years old and stuck in my ways lol

Anyway, all I get in the captured end file in MP4 format is a black screen with audio.

I had a search before posting and found numerous black screen posts but nothing that tells me in laymans terms or in basic format how I should set this up to work etc.

I am getting files etc, so I think that is ok. All drivers are up to date, and all of the other software (fraps) isnt there. Fraps was working but as soon as I paid for it, then it no longer worked and Ghosts was freezing all the time, rendering me annoyed. Another google search come up with this software which actually looks better and I will support if I can get it working?

Can anybody give me a guide or help to get this capturing the games I play?

Many thanks

I have also attached the LOG File.

Steve

Well, you didn't actually add a source to your scene! After you've added a scene by right clicking the Scenes box, you must right click the Sources box to add a source. For CoD, I would recommend using Game Capture. It's the highest performing capture method, and allows you to capture games in fullscreen. Then, while the game is running, make sure to select it from the drop down menu in the Game Capture properties window. I would recommend checking "Stretch image to screen" for sure, and maybe "Capture mouse cursor" if you so desire.

Side note: Sometimes game capture won't work via the drop down menu selection, but don't panic! You can use the Hotkey function. Simply set a hotkey (I recommend something like Ctl+F12, something you wouldn't normally press) and then when you are in game while the stream/recording has started, simply tap the hotkey to have OBS grab the screen. It might take more than one tap sometimes. Do note that if you are playing your game in Fullscreen mode, when you alt tab and minimize the game, it will stop rendering and show a black screen in OBS, this is normal! You can still see the preview window if you put OBS on a second monitor or something.

Thanks very much Krazy, see simple things missed :)

Got it and recorded fine. A few little tweaks needed I think, there was some clipping on the playback which I will try with a higher frame rate, maybe 60?

Also a little echo coming through on the audio, but maybe picking up from the mic which I hadn't set to PTT ....

So far so good, and will look at supporting OBS with a donation if possible, but will look on the website for that info.
