Question / Help False Negative?

(I don't know where to put this, so I'm putting it here. If this is the wrong thread, please move it to the thread where it would be relevant. Thank you.)

I scanned the Installer on virus total: I found this.
F-Prot - W32/Symmi.AJ.gen!Eldorado
Is this a false negative? Thanks.

Hello,

I started using this software maybe 4 months ago, I absolutely loved it. However, maybe 2 months ago Norton marked it as unsafe. I scanned it and voila, it didn't do so good. I quickly uninstalled and reformatted my laptop and scanned the-crap-out-of-it. Once I reinstalled all my files back onto my laptop, I downloaded OBS and ran it though virustotal and 7-out-of-54 found a malicious file. So, I did not install. Two weeks later, I re-scanned and 1-out-of-54 marked it as malicious that being F-Prot - W32/Symmi.AJ.gen!Eldorado.So, today, I re-downloaded OBS and still F-prot picks it up as malicious. I really want to use this software though, as it does what I need it to.

P.S: Norton no longer picks it up as "unsafe"

What exactly does a "false positive" mean? Did F-Prot pick up a file not in this installer? Is F-prot marking a safe file as "harmful"? Or is it a file, that could be used or manipulated, by other files, for harmful activities? If this file is in the installer, what is it exactly, that Norton and then F-prot picked it up as harmful?

I'm sorry, I'm usually skeptical, as I used to get hit hard with viruses on my old computer.

Yeah no virus .. Also "Eldorado" is their heuristics engine, an engine that scans for unknown threats, so whatever it finds does not mean that its 100% malware, It means that it found something suspicious .. It could be harmless, or it could be the end of the world virus. So contact F-proot and let them know :) However in regards to OBS, it is absolutely harmless.

What is NOD32?

I do not use F-Prot just during virustotal scans.

My concern is that Norton originally picked it up as malicious.

Well, I'm going to install it, hopefully it's safe. I know a lot of streamers use this software, And i loved it too.

You are too quick to reply before I can change MY reply hehe. Anyway NOD32 has the lowest false positives, proven time and time again by av-comparatives.org - It's not immune to false positives so keep that in mind, but they do a great job at filtering out safe stuff.

Anyway contact whatever antivirus vendor you use and let them know. They'll investigate and issue an update. OBS is safe to use!
