I have two decked out Alienware 18 LAPTOPS (don't ask lol) with the following specs:

Dual NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 880M

1TB SSD Quad Play RAID 0 (4x256GB SSD SATA 6Gb/s)

32GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (4x8GB)

Intel Core i7-4940MX processor (Quad Core, 8MB Cache, Overclocked up to 4.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost)

There is a HDMI port that supports both in/out on each of the laptops.

Now. Is setting up one of them as the streaming PC and one as the gaming pc possible or even a smart idea? Would I just need an external capture card?

Any suggestions welcome. TIA

OBS is terrible at SLI recording, last I heard. So using a capture card on a separate computer is a good workaround to this limitation. Get a USB 3.0 capture device (I'm assuming these are laptops and you can't get a PCIe capture card) as the USB 2.0 devices have all kinds of problems.

Yes, they're laptops. I'm pretty new to streaming, but I've poked around and am now delving deeper into it. I just didn't want to waste my time putting in effort to make this dual laptop setup work, only to realize its a pile of dump. I was looking at the avermedia live gaming extreme external capture device, and liked the looks of it and will look more into it if/when i decide to go with this setup
