Question / Help Dropping Frames + Low Bitrate

Hello,

I'v been having problems recently with streaming (on twitch) with crazy dropped frames and low kb/s. I have had no problems streaming for the last 5 or so months until this recent OBS update. I'm not sure it's the update's problem, as I have tried installing older OBS versions and ended up with the same problem but I was easily streaming games at around 2k bitrate at 60 fps for hours before. I have tried switching twitch servers and lowering fps to 30. I have tried multiple speed testing websites and they tell me that my speed is around what it always has been before I have had these problems.

My goal is mostly to figure out how to make OBS stop dropping frames and my kb/s.

Also if it matters, in "Preview Stream" mode, it tells me that everything is running fine, 60 fps and 2000-2100 kb/s.

Looks like a throughput problem. If you actually drop frames, that's almost always what it is. Trying to stream at too high a bitrate for your connection. Run a 6MB test at http://testmy.net/upload to get a good idea of what you have for constant rate.

I'd also have to note that 2000kbps isn't really enough for a decent-quality 720p@60 stream. Even at 45fps, you'll likely get quite a bit of blocking in anything with an appreciable amount of onscreen motion.

I ran the test on the link you provided and it says i'm only getting around 900 even though I have a plan for 3mb with my ISP (SHAW service). The speedtest.net says im getting around 2.5 ish. Is this just a case of them choking my internet? Is that something I could talk to them about?

Speedtest.net is worthless for livestreamers (and what your ISP tells you you should be getting, even less-so). It tests overall throughput, not constant, and multi-link rather than single. Many ISPs use a 'burst mode'; running your constant throughput far below what you're rated at, and briefly spiking far above it so it evens out. Which works fine if you have a file you're transferring (and can just grab more to take advantage of the speed spike), but not so much when it comes to a steady rate transmission (like livestreaming).

Your best bet is to assume the rate you're getting is what you'll be getting; most ISPs work/contract on a 'best effort' system, and do not guarantee speeds for non business-grade connections. Just one more way they shaft the consumer.
You can try calling them to complain, but it's less than likely to do much good.

Speed tests and ISP speed quotes in general aren't terribly useful for determining streaming speed ability. They can get you in the ballpark, but at some point you're going to need to do some testing to find what you can actually stream at. A lot of users find they can only stream at a bit rate much lower than their quoted upload speed due to several issues, such as routing to the selected ingest server or other ISP issues.
