Question / Help Dropping FPS in OBS

I have been having a problem where I drop FPS in certain games on OBS. The OBS is dropping frames. One example is Rust, the FPS in OBS drops to the 20's and it is unwatchable. I have ran a couple of logs through the analyzer and it is telling me that I either need to raise my bitrate or I need to lower my resolution. If you think this is what is causing the problem which do you suggest and by what amount should I change it? Thanks in advance.

Depends if you are CPU or GPU limited, I would try setting the fps to 30 in OBS first. If that doesn't change anything then lower the games graphic settings/cap fps/use vsync until the fps is where you want it to be while streaming.

How do I know if I am CPU or GPU limited? Is that asking if I have a capable CPU or GPU to stream at the settings I am using?

Well if you are streaming and your CPU is at over 70%+ load that can cause low fps for example. You can check by monitoring task manager. Conversely you can use something like GPU-Z to see if your GPU is at really high load as well. Some games use a lot of CPU, while others will hit your GPU harder. You need enough headroom with both to stream smoothly if that makes sense to you, because OBS needs both to function ideally.

Okay yeah, that makes complete sense. Thank you. I will mess with settings in game and in OBS to get it right so I can run almost any game. First I will lower to 30 FPS in OBS and continue from there. Thank you and I will report back here if I need anything.
