Question / Help Dropped Frames and Disconnects

Hey guys, I seem to be having issues with Twitch over the past week. I thought it would fix itself,as Twitch is derpy sometimes, but it doesn't seem to have gotten better.

At random intervals I will start dropping frames and it seems as though my connection to Twitch is getting 'strangled' for lack of a better word or it will just outright stop transmitting data. While this is happening all my other internet related applications function fine and I even have a ping running, which shows no problems. I'm pretty sure it's not my ISP as running a speed test and shaper probe shows no problems.

I have tried switching ingestion servers, NY/VA/TX, but that doesn't seem to do anything at all either. I'm not entirely certain what is causing it.

I have noticed that my network indicator will occasionally 'pulse' from green to lime-green and back again at regular intervals, but it doesn't go red. Turning off low-latency mode and minimize network impact fixes this, but it causes my ping to start sporadically climbing and I still disconnect or start dropping frames randomly.

I switched from VBR to CBR and tried it with and without padding, but it doesn't seem to change anything. It also seems like I'm less likely to disconnect entirely when using VBR for what that's worth.

Is anyone else having issues with this? I've included a logfile for your viewing pleasure. Keep in mind the earlier 2m or so streams were from me testing settings and weren't where I was trying to stream.

I've been streaming for quite some time without problem, this is something that started happening within the last week. All of the above on that FAQ I've done or checked.

I'm aware of the red text, sometimes there is something that hasn't been done or has been overlooked. If it's a case with Twitch I was hoping other people would have other information available.

Based on your original post you haven't followed all of the steps in that thread, so I was suggesting that you start there.

Hello Bensam. I am having the exact same problem. I used to be able to stream without any issues but up until this past week I have been getting bad frame drops and really bad upload stalls. I had tried what sapiens keeps posting however the same result happens. So I decided to call a tech from My ISP and have him come to my home. He was able to prove nothing was wrong in on their side of the things and he suggested to replace the modem. I did this and it did not work for me. Still getting bad uploads and frame drop city. I am at a loss at this point. Let me know if you find any solutions. Thanks.

Gonna bump this I have also attached my log from a test I did today which pretty much sums up what happens when I stream. Not sure if it will help.

Yeah... the weird thing is, sometimes my output will flatline or get really bad, but I still wont disconnect... It'll just sit there for a bit with no upload. My video will go offline on Twitch, but after a little bit it'll start again, give users a "Failed to load video", spinning circle, or I'll just appear completely offline till I manually restart my stream (even though I'm still transmitting on my end). I assume this is something on Twitch's side? It's only been happening for about a week.

I thought it was the ingestion server, but they all seem to do it.

Still had issues last night. For some reason it only seems to happen late night, when I stream into morning hours it stops happening.

I have been having this exact same issue lately as well. For a long time my connection has been rock solid to twitch and my ISP has always kept me very happy. Before I made any posts on the OBS forums I wanted to make sure it wasn't just my ISP becoming flakey, router issues, driver issues, etc...

I replaced my router, had my ISP replace my modem and rewire my whole house and this did not solve the issue. I formatted my streaming PC just to make sure there wasn't any driver issues and the problem was still not fixed.

After all the time I spent on this I decided to check to see if this is perhaps an OBS issue. I bought a subscription for *gasp* Xsplit. (I figured with their new release it would be a good time to see what they have changed anyways). Surprisingly they have made some significant improvements (But It's still no OBS). Lo and Behold I did multiple streaming sessions flawlessly without any dropped frames.

Now I know this is a tricky issue and there are going to be a lot of skeptical people out there saying 'It was your internet' or 'your settings must have been different' but believe me I checked again and again to make sure bitrate, streaming server were all identical.

I also know an issue of this type is going to be extremely difficult to diagnose, pinpoint, and fix based on the nature of the problem. If it is in fact a software issue that's only affecting a small amount of people than it will be difficult to filter through the posts and isolate the people with this issue from people just experiencing typical connection issues that show up on these forums time and time again all of which get directed to the regular.

I love OBS. I have been using this software to stream on my channel for nearly 2 years now and would love to continue to use it but this dropped frames issue/disconnects is unbearable while streaming and forces me to use Xsplit. (Which still doesn't support alpha channels on video's *shakes fist*)

PS. I haven't tried what the previous poster suggested, re-entering my streaming key. I'll give this a try again to see if it fixes the issue and report back if for some odd reason this does fix it.

It disables the SIO_IDEAL_SEND_BACKLOG_CHANGE WSAIoctl that some 3rd party software might hate. It also prevents the TCP window from scaling during the connection, which again some 3rd party software or hardware (routers, firewalls, modems, etc) might hate.

Generally you don't want this as the send window should scale to match the appropriate bandwidth-delay product. I added this option as an experimental way to disable this feature in case there are still incompatible things out there (there really shouldn't be in 2014 but you never know...)

I tried streaming with this change in my profile.ini and it seems to have worked. Since this has been happening it was very rare for me to go a streaming session without any dropped frames and today I had a flawless stream session without the issue.

I am happy to be using obs again and if you don't hear back from me than it would seem that this issue was fully resolved by adding that line. Also I use a lot of 3rd party software on my streaming PC for various reasons so this makes perfect sense as to why this may be happening.

Thanks!

If possible, try to figure out what is incompatible as it would be useful to know. Most likely it is some firewall / security software or your router.

Yup, changing stream key didn't do anything. I'll try this tonight.

Kudos Zeth for doing so much troubleshooting, it didn't cross my mind to try out Xsplit to see if it works fine with it (plus I hate using it). I also didn't consider using a older version of OBS as much doesn't change in it.

As to what may be incompatible, I use DDWRT on my router so I assume that would be the most compatible out of all the routers and firmware. Also it is the most robust and stable, definitely consider using it if you can.

I have the most up to date ethernet driver as well and my streaming PC has Windows 7 on it. Zethiann didn't note what version he's using, but I'm guessing he's on W8.

I'd also like to note my streaming PC hasn't change in a long time, it started happening roughly a week and a half ago out of the blue. Much like Zeth, I've had a rock solid streaming experience for months and then this just started happening.

Sounds good.

Before I start the gruel-some process of trying to figure out which application is the issues, it could save us a lot of time if Bensam and I can post what 3rd party software we're using and maybe we will find something in common to narrow it down before I begin.

Streaming PC Specs:
I7 4770k
EVGA GTX 670 FTW
8GB DDR3 Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133 CAS 9
Avermedia Livegamer HD
Windows 8.1 Enterprise

Software Used:
OBS
Plugins:
CLR Browser
Video Source
Chatty
Reaper
Teamspeak
Twitch Alerts
CPUID HWMonitor
Modbot
Teeboard
Google Chrome running Nightbots AutoDJ
Nightbots Songname Auto Updater

Bensam. If you see anything that you use on this list let me know and I'll check there first.

Didn't stream last night. I have OBS as well, none of your listed plugins. I also have Teamspeak and Twitch Alerts running. I've streamed with and without Chrome open and this has happened so I don't think that's it.

I use Argus Monitor to monitor my system. Otherwise I don't have anything else on the list.

I'm on Windows 7 64bit with a 8350 and 8GB of memory, Livegamer HD as well.
