Distorted monitored sound when volume of the source is less than 100%

Hello,
I'm trying to set up a VJ/DJ session with OBS Studio on Linux. My scenes are video and/or audio fragments to be played on a projector and amplified thru the speakers during the show.
Naturally, the audio levels in different fragments are not consistent with the mood they need to convey, so I tried to balance them using the audio mixer volume control. When I decrease the level, the volume of the media source, the volume of the monitoring doesn't decrease, but a distortion sound appears. When I turn down the volume of the media source all the way down, the noise becomes deafening. Do turn down your speakers/headphones when listening to the attached sample.

I managed to capture the glitch by capturing the Audio Output Capture (PulseAudio).

Clarification. I have this issue when I monitor over the RME Babyface USB audio interface. When I monitor over the build-in Intel audio, the volume control works as expected. I attach another sample as the previous one doesn't seem to be available.
