Distorted image from VCR in OBS after opening capture device in VLC

I opened my S-Video/Composite to USB capture device with VLC just to test something earlier and now when I use OBS, the input feed from the VCR is either in black and white or in colour with distorted colour blocks - seems to randomly pick one or the other. Everything I've tried has not fixed this and I can't think of anything else to try to fix it.

Setup I had has been working fine for 2 years right up until I opened the capture device in VLC.

Things I've tried:
Restarting multiple times
Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB capture device
Uninstall and re-install capture device drivers
Uninstall VLC
Create a new source in OBS
Create a new user account on the PC and set up OBS again fresh
Switching between composite video and S-Video (I use S-Video normally)
Switching between different video standards, PAL, NTSC, SECAM etc. (default I was using was PAL_I)

Does anyone have any suggestions or know what is causing this?
Picture below of the "colour blocks" I was referring to. The screen should just be blue.

Thanks!

Likely hardware issue. Check wiring first. Connectors and wires all are different even if you think they are same.

Thank you for the response. I did try disconnecting and re-connecting them but to no avail. And it was working fine for 2 years until today so it's just very strange that it stopped working correctly as soon as I opened the capture device with VLC. I don't understand how that could have caused this to happen though.

If anyone else finds this post, just want to say that sometime after this the picture stopped working entirely - so it's safe to say it was just in the process of dying.
