Studio doesn't have all the features classic has. Output to Desktop audio being my biggest cripe. But that's it? It worked once but not anymore so just upgrade?

What exactly are you trying to output to desktop? As far as I know, Studio has all the same desktop output options that Classic did, which is for webcams and capture cards. Classic doesn't have true audio monitoring, and that's planned to go in to Studio for 18.0.0. As for other features, there's only a tiny handful of obscure functions that have not made it into Studio yet, but we're nearly at feature parity, so I'm not sure what other features you could be looking for.

And yes, Classic is more or less expected to continue to break more and more as time goes on as it's not updated. Any time you update a driver or piece of software that OBS may interact with, there's a chance that Classic will break and it will not be fixed. Since the crash you're having is part of the directshow plugin in Classic, this is not surprising in the least.

Classic has an option that I think is actually called "output audio to desktop" If i'm using a cap device I can't hear the audio coming in from it using studio. I have to either use a mixer or turn the sound up on my tv. Unless I've missed this setting somewhere in studio.

The same option is in studio, and has been for ages:

Are you scrolling down? The default window size might show a scroll bar where you have to scroll down to see all the available options. But yes, you should make sure you're on 17.0.2 regardless.
