Bug Report Capture Issues

Game Capture does not work, period. Window Capture tries. Monitor capture works, but not as desired.

  • Yes, my adapter is set to the first setting, because its the only setting.
  • -- And yes, I've tried reselecting it again anyway.
  • Yes, my NVIDIA 3D Application settings for OBS 32 and 64 bit are set to Performance.
  • Yes, I've tried everything the laptop settings post detailed.


Since Game Capture doesn't work, I decided to try Window Capture. Window Capture will draw the outer box of the game, a white space in the inner window (Or a ghost of previous applications), and the cursor. This is with the game in windowed and full screen modes. Then I decided to use Monitor Capture. If I run any game in fullscreen mode it draws a black screen but if I run a game in windowed mode it will capture it along with the desktop. I cannot adjust the game to fit the monitor correctly in its largest windowed mode, and I don't want to record my desktop with the game in its smallest windowed mode (Its only large or small, no in-between), so I must use fullscreen mode.

Why doesn't OBS want to capture full screen?

For the game capture, what capture method are you using? Are you selecting the game from the list, or using the hotkey? Because in your game capture log, it appears that the game capture hook doesn't even start at all, so the game's not getting hooked. If you haven't tried the hotkey method, give that a shot.

Unfortunately, Window capture with Aero enabled doesn't work on OpenGL games due to the way OpenGL bypasses the window compositor. If you want to capture an OpenGL game without game capture, you'll have to disable Aero, which is unfortunate since Window capture with Aero enabled is very fast, and disabling Aero makes it run slower.

It -should- work on garry's mod. I need to write more logging information for game capture on OBS' end and see what's going on there.

Can you post a log of when you tried the hotkey method? Make sure you have the game selected, and then press the game capture hotkey that you set in the game capture source.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere. That log has a lot of this error in it:

That is an error caused by some sort of outside interference. Are you running any sorts of mods or overlay programs at all? Anything at all that might overlay the game or hook the game in addition to OBS?

Also, I forgot to ask earlier, are you running OBS as administrator?

Yea, garry's mod really should be working fine. All valve source games work fine normally, unless they're set to directx 8 or lower.

Now that you mention it the only thing I can think of is Steam's stupid Overlay UI. I'll disable it and give it a test.

Okay I disabled the Steam Overlay UI and tried application and hotkey again. No dice, we're not gambling today.

Well, I'm out of ideas. For whatever reason, OBS just doesn't want to hook the game. Maybe it's a GPU issue, or a Vista issue, but I really don't know. It's very odd indeed. I'm sorry I can't be of any more help.

AFAIK gmod on pc is limited to DirectX, wheras the MAC version has an option to run OpenGL. Perhaps there is a special flag to invoke OGL on PC, but I am not aware of it.

That being said, capture of Garry's Mod works as intended on my rig. (Open Broadcaster Software v0.60b test build 9, x64 binary)
(Win7 x64, multi-monitor config, Radeon 6870 video card)

I shall now attempt capture on a rig with a gf 9800 w/ windows xp x64 (a rare bird I know) to see if it could be an nvidia issue or perhaps a previous windows version issue. I also have a Vista x64 machine I can test out if need be, but I figure if it works on xp x64 and 7 x64 there shouldn't be anything keeping vista from working....

edit: curiously enough, OBS will not work with windows xp x64!

and there is no log file I can find. (Funny how sometimes an attempt to replicate a problem yields it's own thread worthy issue). I shall clean this up after I test out vista.

edit 2:
I now see from the FAQ that it never would support any variant of XP due to the lack of DX10, so disregard this!
