Question / Help Can only use Monitor Capture. Window/Game not working

Whenever I attempt to use Window Capture it will capture a frozen image of the screen and show me the in-game mouse couser; but nothing else. Game capture gives me a black screen, or in some cases the game actually gives me an error message until OBS is closed or I force close the game.

SLI is not enabled, and I've tried going in to my 3D management settings and forcing all applications (game and OBS) on to the same adapter. Same issues occur. Monitor capture seems to be the only capture method that works without any issues.

Edit: The logs were generated with the 64-bit version of OBS. I've also attempted everything with the 32-bit and get the exact same results. Bot log files were generated starting out with window capture, then attempting to switch to game capture.

Edit2: One other thing to note is that I had dabbled with OBS previously and had the same issues but thought nothing of it as I was just tinkering. Now that I'm actually interested in streaming I just performed a fresh re-install of my OS (all drivers included).

What game specifically?

The issue of window/game capture not working is with ALL games. I haven't found a single one in my steam library that works yet.

The only one that actually gives a full on error and requires the force close is with game capture and Guild Wars 2.

Window capture with all games does the same, basically takes a screenshot of the first frame of the game and that's about it. The in-game mouse courser works as normal, but the actual game image stays frozen.

I'm beginning to think it may be some kind of hardware conflict and I might just be SOL, as this was happening pre-format.

Hm, perhaps see if it's a conflicting program. (Cue copy & paste: ) These could be other capture programs, game mods and graphics mods (sweetfx in particular), graphics card utilities like msi afterburner or the EVGA 'K boost' feature (I think it's called), or programs that put in custom in-game overlays for their program, such as teamspeak/mumble overlays, or razer synapse overlay. If you're using "D3Dgear" (a very invasive program), you must completely completely uninstall it to fix the issue.

No 3rd part programs like that at all. After my fresh reinstall all I put on were drivers, chrome, my games and OBS. After some more experimenting window capture seems to work on other windows, like chrome and steam, but not on any games what so ever.

I pulled my second card, swapped cards, and did a few different hardware setups (trying different DVI ports, etc...) and to no avail.

At this point I'm giving up on my dreams of becomming a professional streamer until I upgrade to a new computer. I'm 99.9 percent sure it's hardware (even though everything else runs just dandy, no over-heating or any other signs of a bad card). But if there's any other information you need, if you're curious as to what may be causing this, please let me know!

Did you test disable aero(Settings > Video)? - this is stupid but make sure to install directx 9c - If it still doesn't work afterwards, if you got a spare hard drive then install Windows 8 on it and it should work without any problem or even Windows 10 techpreview.

Yeah if I do window capture with aero disabled, it works just like monitor capture. The game captures, but I can alt-tab and it captures what's behind it etc etc.. And monitor capture works just fine as well.

I just tried the directx 9c, no change. I'll have to give the new windows a try, thanks for the suggestion. I planned on entirely skipping 8 (working in tech support it was an absolutely nightmare, even though it's worlds better than it was at release) and am actually looking forward to 10, so...

I'm having this exact issue. "Preview Stream" sticks at the first frames of the game (In my case, Elite: Dangerous) and then... doesn't update.

Rozoga: You mentioned using your Steam library. Have you tried turning off the Steam overlay for these games? It's not the case in my game (Elite doesn't use Steam), but it's worth a shot.

This is my log, in case it helps:

I have a GTX 660 Ti for my primary monitor(s). The integrated graphics is driving one of the secondaries. Additionally, I'm getting exactly what you describe - the thing's stuck on one frame of the game, and it just doesn't update. Catches the mouse, even the game's custom mouse graphic, but it won't update the game's visuals. The multiple monitors isn't an issue, since an earlier version wasn't having any issues in this manner.

This is my card, if it helps a dev determine what's going on.

Per the other suggestion I'm going to throw the windows 10 tech preview on a spare drive I have and get that a shot, whenever I get the chance. I'll make sure to update this and let you know how it goes!

Window Capture giving the same effect as Monitor Capture is an extremely odd issue, that should not happen.
Also why would you Alt+Tab when using Window capture.. are you doing it for a full screen game? Hopefully you aren't, and you are just switching windows :P

Hopefully the testing in Windows 10 techpreview should work like it should just like on Windows 8.1 for me

There's many games that grab the mouse. When running in windowed mode, you still need to alt-tab to move the mouse outside the window.

You sure you disabled the mouse capture inside the Window Capture setting properties of that capture source?
--edit-- nvm I forgot you mean when playing the game, I assumed it was only when looking onthe recording/steaming/preview obs window.

I have to alt-tab because of borderless window mode. But if it's a 800x600 window, it acts EXACTLY like monitor capture mode. I see the taskbar and any windows I drag in front of it (Which I don't know if that's normal with window capture). Just tried it again, confirming the capture mode is set to windowed and the only change I make is disabling aero (even though I know windowed mode should have aero enabled for it to work... I was just trying anything and everything).

Only other suggestion I got is... uninstall OBS, use ccleaner to delete any left overs, then again redownload and install the latest OBS - to test again afterwards

Also on your testing does it happen on both versions x86(32bits) and x64(64 bits) OBS? - installing OBS installs both versions so search in start OBS and you will see both.

Well let's wait after you make the test on windows 10 techpreview - to see if the same thing happens, it has no aero so it shouldn't affect it.
