Both Mic and Desktop audio distortion using both desktop and app capture

Everything was fine using the beta version of 28. But ever since I installed the official release, my audio has been glitchy and distorted. It's random, so it's very hard to debug. But if you watch these two vods long enough you can hear the distortion. I tried disabling all the sound filters, didnt help. I tried switching between application capture and desktop capture, same problem. I can't even stream right now because of this. I'd try the older versions of OBS but I really need the HDR support of 28.

Weird thing is it started as my mic distorting so I wasnt sure if the problem was obs or not, but today my game was also glitching. So it's totally obs causing it.

Help? :x

Please review and follow directions and recommendation on the Analyzer:

Windows 11 Insider Build isn't supported and shouldn't be used. For many win11 is a problem and the issues it causes are fixed when rolling back to win10. Some others have not a single issue wit win11. Some have no issues until a recent win11 update.

Yeah, i found the analyzer right after my post. Turns out i had Hardware-accelerated GPU sceduling on. That was causing the audio distortions. I disabled it and I'm fine. I really havent had many issues on windows 11, it's been nice so far.

I would like to report that the issue is still there even after disabling hardware-accelerated gpu scheduling.

it happens randomly and rarely, normally 25-30 min into the stream or recording, and then again 3h later.

it happens with different games, in different scenes, using both windowed and game capture, in hdr and sdr... literally doesnt matter.

I even made sure all my audio sources and outputs were ALL set to 16 bits / 48 khz, and the issue persists.

Here's a log file where the issue happened twice during a 3h stream:

the analyzer doesnt have much to say. I have to use two game captures cause i'm a vtuber. the audio is fine on my end so it's not a windows problem. it's literally obs making my game audio glitch.

Here's a sample of the last time it happened, 3h into today's stream:

and here's a sample of it happening in a different game like a month ago:

I have searched through the forums and it seems like others also have the same problem. I found a thread going back a year ago, before version 28 came out, of people having the same issue. i tried everything suggested in every post and every youtube video linked. The only thing I need to try now is to completely reformat my ssd and reinstall everything from scratch, one app at a time, and do hours-long test recordings to see if maybe the issue comes back. as this seems to be a randomly occuring problem that only happens for a few seconds during a hours long stream or recording, it's very hard to debug. Also it seems to only be affecting my game, and not my voice? idk it's weird if it only affects my games but still happens in different games.

Fix the multiple Game/Display captures in a single scene issue That might be part of it The log doesn't say what the captures are Also, try locking your game to the same FPS as your stream
When it's happening it sounds like there are two duplicate audio sources Though I don't see that in the log but something is conflicting and confusing OBS

Hi, I'm facing this same issue and it's apparently being caused by the application audio capture as far as I've tested I haven't found any way to fix it. I recommend not using this function to capture your game audio until it is fixed.

Again and as pointed out above, look into your video and audio captures You have a conflict somewhere
I'm using the new application audio capture in obs studio 28. all my global audio sources are disabled. I have one application audio source for my game, one for my mic, and one for edge for youtube music. Again and as pointed out above, I have two game captures in the same scene because I'm a vtuber and I need a game capture for my model.

I just had to end the stream because my audio was so bad. This time it was youtube music sounding terrible. i actually had viewers say they were leaving the stream cause it was painful to listen to.

I dont have a video sample this time because I dont save my youtube music to my vod, but here's a log:

Of note is that my youtube music is captured using a different audio source than my game or my mic.

honestly at this point I have no choice but to stop using application audio capture. I'm either gonna have to revert back to using desktop audio capture, which I dont want to do because i dont want youtube music in my vods, or i'm gonna have to dust off the elgato wave software...

Try updating to OBS 28.1 Nothing audio related in the Release Notes but minor updates wouldn't be listed

This might be a helpful topic Seems applications need to not be minimized

Could also try this plugin as an alternative
