Question / Help Avermedia Live Gamer Portable ps2 Help

Hi, I have the Avermedia Live Gamer Portable, I am hoping I can get some help getting this to work with OBS. The Problem I am having is that the device only shows a red box or sometimes just a black screen. I have no clue why, the device works fine when I plug it into a ps3 but not with the ps2, I thought at first that maybe the device is not compatible with the ps2 however I can get it working fine on Xsplit well at least the video, not so much the audio :P. Anyways I prefer OBS so it would be great if I could get it to work on OBS, if someone could help me I would really appreciate it.

Here is my set up...

1. AV out of PS2 to device.
2. HDMI out to TV.
3. Power device via laptop usb.

Your log is from the 64-bit version of OBS. You have to use the 32-bit version of OBS in order to use the Live Gamer Portable at all, since the Stream Engine is required, and it only has 32-bit drivers.

Ok that's one mystery down, thought I was opening the 32 bit but I guess not. However I still get a red box or blackscreen, I usually get the red box more often though in the 32 bit version. Really hoping I could get this fixed by wednesday as I am planning on streaming a PS2 game on my twitch channel.

Does no one have any suggestions? this problem is doing my head in, I really wanted to stream some ps2 games as most of them are brilliant :D. I will take any suggestions possible if it means I might be able to fix the problem

Sorry, I've never used the Stream Engine, so I'm not sure how it works. You may have to match the resolution and refresh rate of the input (this is something you often have to do with capture cards). I noticed that you have it set to 1920x1080 and 25(?) FPS, which may not be correct. It would be easier if someone who actually has an LGP would drop by the thread and check it out.

To be honest I am kind of regretting my purchase as it has been nothing but trouble, I can only sometimes get it to work with the ps3 or xbox 360 as well. I am sure if the damn thing worked, it would be good but apparently no one has experience with the device so it's hard to troubleshoot and avermedia have ignored all my pleads for help too.

I tried to set the resolution to 640 x 480 which is what the ps2 uses, however when I preview the stream and check the LGP stream engine again it's been forced back to 1280 x 1024, I thought maybe obs was overwriting it however I can not change the settings on 32 bit OBS as it crashes when ever I try to access properties :S, 64 bit obs it's fine.

Here are some pictures to help visualize the issues. Thinking if no one here can help me then I might as well ask for a full refund from avermedia, seeing as the product is faulty it seems. Prob get an elgato, but want to see if I can fix this cause if I can I can save my self a lot of hassle.

I wouldn't blame the device for this, especially if it's working in other programs just fine. However, I would like to say that other people have the LGP working through the stream engine with OBS, so I'm really confused as to why it works there and not here.

Okay, first, try all the custom resolution/FPS combinations that you can. You may also have to use the configuration button as well to make sure it's set to the right settings there as well.

I'm pretty sure this is a misconfiguration combined with a certain design flaw within OBS that's causing to happen (meaning that OBS is partially at fault)

Well even when I get it to work on Xsplit it is still very buggy and unresponsive. I have tried every possible resolution and fps combo I can do with the device and obs and still nothing. I have read online that this is a common problem with the LGP and that people have been sending them back out of disappoint and to be honest I can see why.

I have decided seeing as I have been trying to troubleshoot this for around month now that I will just return it and buy the little extra to get the Elgato which seems to have more support in general and I have only heard good things about it.

I would not recommend this product to anyone personally as it has been nothing but a nightmare, I only got it because it was slightly cheaper than the Elgato (damn my stinginess what it comes to money.) I would rather pay £20/£30 more for a working product.

I would like to thank everyone who has tried to help me but no matter what I try I get no results.

If your laptop has USB 3.0 ports, buy a USB 3.0 device instead of a USB 2.0 device, you'll thank me later. Just completely avoid USB 2.0 devices if you have USB 3.0 ports. Get an xcapture-1 or avermedia U3.

If you had a desktop, this situation would be much easier to deal with because they have access to proper internal devices as well. Laptops are not really very good comptuters to buy if you want to start using lots of devices with them. This is what desktops specialize in, extra devices; laptops on the other hand are designed for portable computing, and doing these sort of complex things leaves you with such limitied options.

It just utterly pains me to see people use laptops and try to do device-based streaming.

Tell you what if you want to pay me the money to fix my desktop pc then be my guest :P. My laptop is a workstation so it can stream quite fine. All 6 my USB ports are 3.0 .

I don't think I will stick with avermedia they have yet to answer as single one of my emails asking for help, not sure if I want to associate myself with a company which is not willing to help it's costumers. Technology is bound to break so a company that specializes in technology should always have a responsive support team.

Question is what capture card to get, I was thinking about the Elgato personally as my mate uses one and has had no problems what so ever and I have always heard positive stuff about them, I know they are used in the game industry as well. From my google searching for solutions for my capture card issues I have noticed a lot of people have experience with the Elgato so it seems like a wise move because if I have problems again I can always ask support from community members.

You should not consider all laptops to be the same, while I agree some notebook and low price laptops are not suited for streaming there are some pretty powerful laptops out there which can compare even with a lot of desktop computers (looking at workstation laptops :P)

I didn't mean it that way, I apologize. I suppose I'm sort of expressing my frustrations with the current state of devices. USB 2.0 just does not have the bandwidth for reliable capture, and people keep buying them and I have to implement them (and coding for these specific types of devices is painful)

It's really not laptops I have issues with, it's just that people want to stream with laptops and then end up wanting to buy some USB device and then get stuck with terrible USB 2.0 devices. Then they have issues with delay, and the quality of the signal is not as good as it could be because it's compressed, where as if they had a 3.0 or internal device it would be uncompressed and with no delay, higher quality, and works flawlessly.

If you want my advise: If you have USB 3.0 ports, get a USB 3.0 device. xcapture-1, avermedia U3 are two of the current USB 3.0 devices on the market.

RamuneGaming, I am having a similar problem. I am trying to use the AV to component cables that come with the LGP and I get the same problem you are, either a black or red box appears.

After a ton of research and hair pulling, it seams that the stream engine just does not work with the av in.

Something I did notice is that, While using the stream engine, when I simply use my hdmi out port on my laptop to the hdmi in on the LGP card, as expected, I see an image of my desktop. Thus the stream engine works for HDMI input.

Unfortunately both of us are still in the hole because we need to use the av in port. What I was thinking was since the hdmi works why not get a av to hdmi converter/adapter/upscaler thingy, or in my case component to hdmi converter? The LGP HAS a av in port so it would follow that it should work, however for now getting a converter seems like a viable workaround for the moment. Instead of getting rid of the LGP and going on to another product.

I'm going to give this a shot idk if it would help you, but I would imagine that other people are having this same problem and Avermedia should eventually fix their stream engine so that the av input actually displays stuff using obs.
