Question / Help AverMedia C985 - No Audio from inputs.

My Setup:
I have a two PC setup. Gaming PC and Streaming PC. My Streaming PC has the AverMedia C985 card capturing video through HDMI and game audio through 3.5mm (out from game pc, in to streaming pc). I currently use a 3.5mm audio splitter to split the audio coming out of my gaming PC, one goes to external speakers, the other goes to the streaming pc.

My Goal:
To get game audio from game pc to output to both external speakers and to the stream PC for recording/streaming.

My problem:

I know for 100% fact that the audio on that 3.5mm cable is working.

I added the AverMedia card as a source in OBS. In the properties for the capture card (in OBS), I set the audio input device to '(Use Device Audio)'. I can get video, but no audio (plugged into the 3.5mm input jack of the capture card).

So then I tried plugging my audio into the 'input' of the audio card on my streaming PC instead. Now I've set the audio on the capture card properties (in OBS) to 'Line In', I still cannot get audio in OBS and oddly I no longer get video either.

Any suggestions?

Hey dude,

I sometimes have the same problem. The video issue is down to the gaming PC being on "before" the streaming PC. So restart your gaming PC and then try previewing in OBS and the video should be there. (I have a HDMI switcher that i turn on and off to to save restarting the gaming PC)

To get audio via the 3.5 port, you need to change the crossbar settings in OBS.

1) Open OBS
2) Right click on your Avermedia Source and click "Properties"
3) Click "Open Crossbar"
4) In the right hand drop down menu select "1: Audio Decoder Out"
5) In the left hand menu select "1: Audio Line In"
6) If I am using 3.5mm I always tick the box that says "Link Related Streams"
7) Press "OK"
8) Press "OK"

Preview the stream again and sound should be working :)

FYI, the 3.5mm input on the Avermedia was implemented horribly, and you're right to not use it and to use your sound card's audio input instead. When I checked the Avermedia forums about it, I saw all kinds of posts complaining and the ending conclusion is that there's something fundamentally wrong in the drivers or hardware with the 3.5mm audio in on that card.

Thank you for the info, I hadn't looked at those settings before.

However, using your suggestion from above it still doesn't seem to give me sound. However, I did notice that when using the above method and after recording, when I playback the recording I can hear sound from the gaming PC, but only if I turn the volume WAY up. So I don't know if this is bleed through my muted microphone or if it's the actual game audio being captured, but at a super low level.

I tried swapping out audio cables to make sure there was no weirdness. I also tried both input on the avermedia card and again the input on the actual soundcard (and made sure to make the switch in the 'crossbar' settings to use the line-in on the soundcard). Still no go.

Also, I do have a 3.5mm microphone plugged into the streaming PC, so I think that kinda messed up the line-in on the streaming PC as well (I don't think it can listen to both at the same time).

I suppose I could combine the microphone 3.5mm with the game pc audio out 3.5mm into a single 3.5mm cable going into the streaming PC, but that seems more like a work-around hack. I'll try that now just to find out how it sounds. (EDIT: That didn't work either, had to turn volume all the way up to hear the playback which was still whisper quiet).

Just for kicks, here's my recent log using your above method: https://gist.github.com/0d6b2118ea71400cc2ac

I hope it's ok to bump threads, I've literally (and embarrassingly) spent hours trying to figure this problem out with no luck.

Hey dude,

To get the audio to come through the HDMI

1) On the gaming machine "right click" on the speaker icon in the task bar
2) Left Click "Playback Devices"
3) Left Click the "Recording" Tab
4) Double Click on "Stereo Mix" *

* If you don't have stereo mix - then you need to right click somewhere in that list and ensure "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" are ticked.

5) Click the "Listen" tab
6) Tick the box that says "Listen to this device"
7) In the select box choose the HDMI out, probably labelled something like "AVERMEDIA" / "AVER_4" etc **
8) Press "OK"

** If there is no AVERMEDIA device in the list, restart the gaming PC and repeat the above steps :)

Give me a shout if it doesn't work :)

Hey Guys,

I know this is a old thread but i m haviing the issue that i normaly have the option to select the avermedia device in my stereomix, but it happened from time to time that it was not there and a restart or two helped most of the time. Sadly it does not anymore and i dont know why.

So as a question, do you have a clue what i have to do to bring the avermedia up to be selectable on my gaming pc (i have a dual pc setup and it ran mostly well :/ )

Restarting my hdmi splitter , unplugging all the cables or even just taking it off the power is not helping aswell.

I´m writing here because this thread helped me out with the restarts once so i hoped you could maybe help me aswell.
