Bug Report Audio gets out of sync on next gen consoles

Hello again,

Not sure if you're aware Jim and I wish I had more info to offer, but when using OBS with my PS4 or XBox One, after an undetermined amount of time the regular game audio will get out of sync (weapon fire, dialog, etc.). Closing and restarting OBS is the only way to fix it. Even the audible queues when selecting between elements in the main PS4 / XBox menus will be out of sync.

I'll report back if I find anything, but In the mean time if there are any suggestions on how to fix this or if there's any further information I can supply, just let me know.

Thanks for the information, does this not happen with ps3/xbox 360? I have the same capture device and I've never had sync issues with it, though I only use it with my xbox 360. Can you give a rough estimate of "undermined about of time"?

I don't recall it ever happening with the PS3 or 360 consoles. First time I noticed it was with Killzone: Shadowfall on the PS4 then Dead Rising 3 on the XBone.

I just played through Ryse last night, but didn't notice a desync. I'll keep looking and report back if I find anything solid.

Argh, I don't have a xbone/ps4. I'll have to get one of these consoles and a game for one to check and make sure things are working correctly. Remember to also try enabling "Use buffering" as well at least as a temporary measure.

I really wish I didn't have to spend that much money right now, but I'll get one to test with.

What game are you guys playing by the way? Anyone have this issue with PS4? Give me some time to buy one, I would prefer to spend my money on a PS4 so I want to verify if the PS4 has this problem or not. Does the PS4 need HDCP splitters?

I'm running into issues with my Xbone. Sync goes out of whack within 9 minutes. I haven't tried streaming it on 720P through the Xbox yet.

The reason why you're having more audio delay with the elgato is because you don't have "use buffering" on with it. Try turning it on first.

It's a setting in the Video Capture source. Just check the Use Buffering box and leave the number at 0.

I stream on twitch regularly and am also getting this issue with PS4 on both Killzone Shadow Fall and Call of Duty Ghosts. Not only does it go out of sync, within just a few seconds to minutes of streaming, there is a clicking sound that appears that will not go away unless OBS is restarted, and then it is only remedied until the audio de-syncs and the clicking starts again. Everything works great with streaming Counter-strike: Global offensive.

I am using a Live Gamer HD as well. Use buffering provided no noticable help to the issue.

The Use Buffering option is mainly for USB devices, and isn't needed by PCIe cards like the LGHD.

It's not a perfect option, but can you try enabling the "Use WaveOut audio renderer" option in the video capture source? I've heard of that helping in some of these circumstances. It seems that DirectAudio has some weirdness to it sometimes.

Using "Waveout Audio Render" created an even more noticable stop/pause in the audio every couple seconds. For information sake, I am using Optical out. Besides a firmware/OBS update I'm out of options except trying one of these audio extractors and feeding the audio via 3.5mm Stereo instead of Optical:

I would probably not advise using "Output to desktop" for sound, as I can't guarantee that things will be in-sync. It's an audio playback method meant more for unbuffered devices, such as capture cards or USB 3.0 devices. "Output to stream only" along with "Use buffering" is the only way to really ensure there won't be problems."

Thank for the insight, Jim. My only problem is that I can't reference the actual game play's sound if I don't output to desktop. There's no other way for me to monitor the optical output to the soundcard that I'm aware of. If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears! :)

I will definitely test the stream without putting the audio to the desktop and see how it works on the stream and will report back. Thanks!

So, I was able to extract the HDMI audio and send it to the computer via 1/8" stereo, bypassing the need to use the S/PDIF output from the PS4.

I used this HDMI Audio extractor unit from Monoprice.com:

This elimnated all crackling/delay issues associated with the S/PDIF output. When using "Send audio to desktop", there was a very small delay, but that's obviously due to the routing, and im sure running it on stream without pushing to the desktop would provide a flawless experience as the audio coming directly out of the extractor is spot on.

While this isn't an ultimate solution for S/PDIF it is definitely a workaround. Hope this helps anyone who may still be having issues and doesn't want to wait for firmware updates.
