After Update 28.0 Audio Monitoring stopped working

I just did an updated OBS to version 28.0
Now my video media source is playing, the Audio Mixer meter reflecting volume changes but I can hear anything. I have checked the advanced Audio property Monitor and Output is set. No configuration has changed. I get my audio from my desktop phone but even when I change to other sources, still no sound.
Please help as I can't record without hearing what I am recording.

Any idea how to resolve this ?
 
I ran into this exact issue as well after updating. I've been able to resolve it after a couple steps (unsure which did the trick TBH)
1. Launch OBS, hear nothing from our Audio Sources.
2. Recorded myself with audio Sources Outputing and me speaking into a mic
3. Confirmed the Recording is picking up all the stuff it should be....but Monitoring in OBS isn't sending anything to my headphones/monitors.
4. In OBS under Advanced Audio Properties with Active Sources Only checked off -> Set Audio Monitoring to Audio Off for all tracks.
5. Change Scenes to something that will automatically play an Audio Source
6. Change it back in Advanced Audio Properties to Monitor and Output.
7. All my Audio Sources are playing as intended now.

My sound suddenly kicked on at this point for that single track, and for everything else after switching back from Monitor Off.
 
I have always enthused over OBS but just wasted a whole day because after clicking yes to an update I found myself with a) no monitor sound and b) a variety of codec error message when I clicked to start recording and c) and odd error about Skype blocking use of OBS. After trying everything I could think of and following every suggestion I could find, I finally gave up and completely uninstalled Ver 28, downloaded Ver 27 and installed that. Hey Presto, everything worked again just as it did before. Who created this giant step backwards? Why?

a) See above. I guess just changing the Monitor setting to anything and changing it back again, for each individual source, fixes it. Like the GUI is right but the actual setting isn't yet, and it only updates on change.


b) For the codec errors, it appears that there's been some housecleaning.

Essentially, NVIDIA (maybe ATI/AMD too) has abandoned their older hardware - stopped releasing drivers for them - including mine, and OBS v28 removed support for the older drivers:

OBS 28.0.3 is the latest that works right on my laptop. Newer ones will not use my NVENC encoders.

I had to uninstall the latest OBS STUDIO release, and download the older OBS 28.0.3 Focal release debian package and install it. The newer ones sudenly will not use my NVENC encoders in my NVIDIA GK104GLM [Quadro K4100M]. Yes I know it's and older NVIDIA card, but it's a laptop, so I cannot...

OBS 28.0.1 can use the old QSV encoder but not the old NVENC encoder?

My NVIDIA graphics card is relatively old (GeForce GT 735M) and has been updated to the latest version of the driver. The previous version 27.2.4 of OBS Studio can use hardware NVENC encoding. Yesterday, I received an update prompt. After the upgrade is completed as required, start the software...

It still works just fine...so long as you don't try to stream or record. I'm also going back to v27 and staying there...at least on this laptop...solely because of this.


c) I don't know. My web browser picks it up just fine. Maybe Skype does things differently?

I've been using v27 for years now because I've tried to update to v28 and v29 multiple times, but each time I do I lose all audio when OBS is open. Once I close it I have everything back. I can see that OBS is getting audio from sources in the mixer, but in terms of monitoring I have nothing. I've run it in administrator, I've switched monitoring devices and then back again and still nothing. I must be missing something because I'm not sure what else to do. I really want to be on a newer version that 27. Please help.

UPDATE:
I use VoiceMeeter Potato to route all of my audio. My A1 channel sends to my Tascam 16x08 which goes out to my monitors, but I also plug my headphones into it as well. I tried plugging my headphones directly into the headphone out on my PC, set my A2 output to my headphones, and routed everything in VoiceMeeter to A2 and I can hear everything while OBS is open. So why isn't OBS/VoiceMeeter/my PC/whatever not playing nice with my audio interface while OBS is open???

Thank you so much. I encountered the same issue after updating and this worked after 2 or 3 tries.

100% worked, so weird the audio just comes back on after doing this....
I'm thinking a nvidia driver update probably messed with this

Vá em Configurações ==> Áudio ==> Avançado ==> altere seu dispositivo de monitoramento para outro e depois retorne ao padrão.
Então reiniciei o OBS, o problema foi resolvido para mim.
