Question / Help 64 Bit OBS Question

Sorry if this has been posted but when I searched the threads I found were from 2014.

I downloaded OBS and heard I need to run the 64bit version (I'm on a 64bit OS).
Where is that located and will I lose all my settings from my 32bit set up? (I guess I have been running 32bit on my 64bit OS)

Thanks!

hmm.. so what I was reading about finding the 64bit version might have been from previous releases of the software back in 2014?

Ok, fair enough.
So if I used the installer for either the original OBS (the one I downloaded) or the multi-platform, it will installed the correct version (32 or 64) automatically?

Both installers (classic and multiplatform) will install both versions on 64-bit operating systems.

The use of 64-bit versions of OBS don't offer any performance benefit and instead only offer reduced device compatibility.

Actually it offers a minor performance benefit, but it's generally around or slightly under 10%. Useful if you're running at the edge of what your hardware can do though (and one of the reasons I can stream 1080p@30 VF on a non-OC'd i7-920).

You have to specify based on what your needs are, and should default to 32-bit unless specific devices don't work on it

Ok, now I'm confused. In the second response he said "It's already installed if you used the installer."

I downloaded the original version and installed it. No where did it ask me which version I wanted to install.
I was told to navigate into the file OBS is located under the C: drive and run the 64bit executable. I looked and there is no 64bit executive.

Why do I feel like I'm going crazy?

c:\program files\obs\obs.exe

But you don't want to use 64-bit anyway.

WHAT?

One should *never* use a 32-bit version of a program on a 64-bit OS unless absolutely necessary. If a device you have to use only works with 32-bit, you use 32-bit, otherwise you use 64-bit because there's a relevant difference in performance plus 32-bit can only use up to 4GB of RAM max.

I "read" that there are two exe files. One for 34 bit and one for 64 bit. Am I correct in this assumption?

And why wouldn't I want to use the 64bit version? I have a 64Bit OS... I read there are performance improvements..

It seems Harold got 32 and 64 bit mixed up earlier: You should always default to 64-bit unless some device you're recording (webcam for example) only works in 32-bit.

And yes, there are two different .exe files. I think for regular (not multiplatform) they're both called obs.exe, but located in different locations.

Ok, so let's see if I understand correctly.

I download OBS beta
Then I run the .exe
I then find the 32 bit version in the file it extracted to and delete it.
I then click the 64bit run file?

I'm not a computer guy and I'm sure this all makes sense to most people. I'm new streaming and OBS so forgive me.

Will my 32bit settings roll over to the 64bit version? (I'm assuming the default version I have been running has been the 32bit)

They coexist. 64-bit installs into a different folder. They both use the same settings and scenes files, so you can switch between them at will. Just run the one you want.

Before we end this convo, may I ask what the location of the 32 bit OBS is? (So I know to never touch it again)

Also, I suppose I will need to delete my existing OBS shortcut and make a new one with this path? c:\program files\obs\obs.exe
