Question / Help .264/.265

Hi everyone, first post on here so dont bully me for my lack of knowledge :D

Anyway, i have a question.

I have shocking internet, between 0.9-1.1mb upload, so best bitrate i can do is around 900ish, so regardless of resolution the quality is not great. i also have to use a laptop (dont ask why)

I just learned about h.265 on the new amd carrizo apu's (i dont care if you like amd or intel) and was considering getting one as h.265 is meant to allow you to stream good quality with less bitrate, which sounds perfect for my situation.

Right now though obs obviously doesn't support .265, so here is my question, can i still do .264 encoding on obs with a processor that has h.265 or can i only do .265 ?

Thanks

You can probably do h264 encoding regardless, but hardware-specific encoding support would require support from the processor manufacturer.

a specific h.265 encoder can usually only do the one job its given but the cpu itself doesnt really care what the task is.

but saying that buying a laptop for streaming isnt really recommended anyway.

You have to differentiate between hardware and software as well as between encoding and decoding.
Are you sure the carizzo cpu's (or apu's, not sure) will have encoding support and not just decoding?

now that you mention it jack0r im not sure, when i heard it has hevc/h.265 i just assumed it was both encode and decode, tried researching and cant get a solid yes or no on the encoding side of things, read someone say the gtx 965m/970m/980m gpu's all actually support h.265 encoding so might go for one of them for future proofing
