I'm at a loss... does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to fix this? The audio on my live stream is adequate, but does sound a bit harsh, and I'd like it to be better if possible. Thanks! :)

and when i've streamed stuff on youtube just using my built in webcam with the same laptop, the audio has been might higher quality. so i assume OBS is doing something, but i have no idea what...

yup, here's the direct quote from Youtube:
  • We recommend you use an audio stream bitrate value of (128 Kbps). The current bitrate for the audio stream (44.00 Kbps) is lower than the recommended bitrate.

I found that I had to use an audio setting of 160kbps in order for the YouTube "OK" message to go away and change to "Good". At 128kbps it gave me a similar error message to what you had (though it said current bitrate was at 78kbps).

turns out this isn't OBS's fault. If I record anything with a microphone in this Win8 laptop, it comes in at the incredibly low bitrate, for reasons that I can't figure out at all. If I use the built in mic, it's fine, but that doesn't sound so good obviously. :(
