Question / Help Windows 8 Latency Issues

So as I mentioned in another thread, I recently upgraded to W8. In W7 I could use minimize network impact and automatic low latency mode in order to reduce my ping in games. It worked out perfectly. With one or the other enabled I would end up with ping spikes all the time.

Now on w8 I can no longer use automatic low latency mode without it causing the stream to start dropping frames. It's still needed as my ping starts spiking if I leave it off. I'm not sure how to fix this though. Everything is fine till it starts getting around my maximum bitrate and then it starts choking itself. My connection is still fine and these are exactly the same settings I used on my capture PC before upgrading to W8.

Cluttered log due to testing quite a few different settings. The end long stream is where I left low latency mode off, but minimize network impact was still on.

Here is a log just connected to a local RTMP server that still has the problem:

Conversely, if I turn minimize network impact off and leave automatic low latency mode on it doesn't happen. It only seems to happen when both options are on at the same time.

Now for the stupid bit. After further testing it seems as though both settings work together except for the bitrate range of 2600-3400Kbps. When I decrease my video bitrate at or below 2600 or at or above 3400 it works fine.

Perhaps a really weird bug?

Edit: Streaming from my gaming PC also does this. Apparently this is a bug in OBS and w8 now. My streaming PC has been w7 for a year or so now. Automatic low latency mode and minimize network impact used to work together on w8 as I used them before I had a streaming PC and I've always had to use both to get a acceptable ping in games.

Yeah, I'm using a loopback address too so I don't think this is just my network causing it. Anyone have any ideas?

Just wanted to update this. I upgraded back to W8 and put up with a lower bitrate of 2500 instead of 3100 I was using. That seemed to make it work alright, but of course at much reduced quality.

In the end after a bit of futzing around I ended up using QoS on my router to fix these problems. I can stream now without 'minimize network impact' and without 'automatic low latency mode'. It seems to have completely smoothed out my network transactions. It also seems as though I can stream pretty close to my max bitrate of 4mbps, where as before I could only stream at 3.1. I get almost no lag. Occasionally I'll get a 10ms spike, but that's it.

My router uses DDWRT for reference. I know QoS doesn't work nearly as good in other routers and they'll crap themselves after awhile or overheat if you leave it on. So far so good for me though.
