Question / Help Will two logitech c920's work together ok in OBS?

Hi all,

We currently stream using OBS with two different webcams (a logitech c920 and diff one) and it works fine. I want to upgrade the second cam to a C920, so we are running two of the same cam. Should this work ok?

I only ask because we encountered problems before when attempting to use two of the same device in OBS (Snowball USB mics) due to drive issues. Will OBS be able to see two seperate webcams? Or will it get confused and need some elaborate workaround to get it working?

Thanks for any help you can offer, just want to confirm before I purchase new cam. Keep up the good work OBS dudes.

On windows, I've personally tested 3 c920s at once and they work fine. On linux, I take that up to 5 cameras.

A lot of people have problems getting even one C920 to work. The main problem is that their USB bandwidth can't handle the 1080p video it outputs. So unless you've taken steps to ensure your USB bandwidth is top-notch (and I'm not sure what that entails, but there are some people that have posted logs with a C920 working fine at 1080p), make sure the resolution of each webcam is lowered. 540p or 480p seems likely to work better, especially with multiple devices. Another thing might be to make sure each webcam is on a different USB controller, if your computer comes with more than one.

The matter of USB bus bandwidth relates to the combination of camera resolution and encoding setting. The camera defaults to sending an uncompressed (YUY2) stream. USB 2 only allows 480 Mbps, which is enough for 720p30 uncompressed.

If you change the camera video format to MJPEG you can set the resolution to 1080p. MJPEG delivers about 20:1 compression, allowing 1080p30 over the USB2 connection.
