It's 100% the HDD. When I record to my SSD there's no skipped frames. It's a 5400 RPM Seagate Expansion with 30 mbps read/writes.

Those skipped frames show up as long stutters where the video will freeze for a few seconds then resume. I'm recording at 1500 bitrate to test, I thought even the SLOWEST HDDs could keep up with that.

Is the HDD in working condition (i.e. on SMART timeouts)?

Is the drive getting powered down/set to a 'green' setting?

Is it (badly) fragmented? That could hurt performance, and the slower a drive the more it hurts.

Also with the evidence staring you in the face, do consider that your drive just might be too slow. Doesn't matter what anyone tells you, if that drive can't handle recording at your current settings, then it can't get the job done.

Maybe the drive is defective (i.e. if you get another one everything will work)...maybe that series is just too slow (getting another 5400rpm drive might work)... or maybe you just need a faster drive (7200rpm drives are cheap, and plenty fast for recording) so why not play it safe and get something that can do what you need it to do and then some, instead of skating on the razers' edge?
