Why did my streaming res change?

I have a video capture device into OBS whose set output is 1280x720. I've been digitizing an 800x600 S-Video stream. It seems that it should output thisa with its 3x2 image by adding black bars on the sides, but instead has been outputting as 16x9 image [presumably cutting off top anf bottom though the full 3x2 image has always shown within the OBS wondows EXCEPT fullscreen preview which like stream has shown no black bars at sides so has presumably cut off top and bottom ].

I reconfigured some things in but should be back at the same situation BUT now fullscreen preview and stream output both show the 3x2 image stretched to 16x9 by adding black at the sides [as always was expected but didn't occur]. What changed? How was settings different before to have done that? ps OBS did update, if that could be why? thx

Or is that impossible and I must have just resized it without being conscious of it?

Ununderstood change is from
with no black borders, to
with big black borders. Thx

800x600 is ratio 4:3, not 3:2. If your device outputs 800x600, go to settings > Video and set 800x600 as base (canvas) resolution as well as output resolution. This will result in a 800x600 video, exactly 1:1 the video you receive from the capture device without any rescaling. This will result in best quality.
Any rescaling to your physical monitor connected to your computer is done by the media player at playback time.

Thanks, 800x600 is not an Option for me under Settings>Video?

Really I am asking what changed for me from having no borders to having borders, is the answer that any change was introduced by me ? Because i hadn't thought I did. thx

Click in the input field and type 800x600. The borders appear due to a vhs recording having a different aspect ratio than your computer monitor.
