Question / Help Which Hardware of Streaming/Recording Computer to Upgrade First?

Hi, I am currently am using the following desktop to do my game streaming/recording and noticed random frame skips

Mobo: Gigabyte H97M-D3H
CPU: i5-4460
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz
GPU: GTX 750
Storage: 1TB Seagate HDD

I didn't notice such lags in my laptop though despite having a weaker CPU

Laptop Model: P170HM / NP8170
CPU: i7 2630QM
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz
GPU: GTX 560M (same performance as desktop GTX 260)
Storage: 250GB Crucial SSD

Recordings are done on an Avermedia Live Gamer Portable 2, recording a HDMI output from an iPad Pro (12.9 inch). OBS settings are the same.

I am quite stumped as the LGP2 works and loads much faster on the desktop due to its compatible CPU according to Avermedia. I suspect the lack of SSD on the desktop may have played a part there, but seeing that game streaming and recording focus more on the CPU, I am puzzled. I am also considering the need to upgrade the GPU to a GTX 1060 but am unsure how much will this help in my use case.

May I know which part of hardware I should focus on?

Thanks!

It should ideally show a streaming / recording session so we can get an idea of what's holding you back.

Strange, that log doesn't show such a session, this one does though

I have more logs if need be, but they are mostly same hardware with different settings (e.g. Aero enabled/disabled, CRF or CBR, various CBR or CBF values, variable frame rate enabled/disabled, resolution changes at device level or output)

You should try the recording presets and see if they work better for you. Looks like you're not really ready to be messing around in advanced mode.

Use the recording quality presets under Settings > Output when in Simple output mode. In the recording section, change the Recording Quality to Indistinguishable Quality, and then select your encoder.

Ah, maybe that's the case lol, will give that a try after work later

Quick note: I have tried Indistinguishable Quality, which in fact used slightly higher bitrates than what I am using.

The issue still persisted, so I decided to try connecting the iPad to the monitor instead of the game capture card. Turns out that the monitor is displaying similar lags, which means that the Lightning to HDMI adapter that I am using to connect the iPad to the game capture card or the monitor may have problems.

I am now asking other relevant forums about this.
