Question / Help "When not in use" box?

I googled a bunch and couldn't find an explanation for this option. Every source I put in has the option "Disable/Disconnect/Unload/etc when not visible/not showing/etc". What exactly does this mean in terms of what counts as not visible or not showing? Like when you click the little eye? Or not being used at that moment? Or when switching scenes? What reasons would there be to tick this box or leave it unticked? Sorry for asking what seems like an obvious answer, but I did try to find an answer myself and just can't find it.

Disable when not showing means it removes the source from memory and turns it off when that scene is not being displayed.
