Question / Help What should I upgrade in order to stream Overwatch?

Hello all,

I would like to be able to stream Overwatch at 720p/60fps or 1080p/30fps. I would like to upgrade part of my computer so I can stream at the setting stated above. I currently tried using the OBC VCE for AMD, but the streaming quality is so fuzzy and blurry. If I don't use VCE and just use my CPU to stream then my game would have some FPS drop. I have about a $300-$400 budget.

I was thinking maybe getting the FX-8350 and maybe just buy a new power supply if the 500W isn't enough (not sure if it's enough). Or buy a better graphic card so the VCE would run better. Or buy a completely new motherboard and CPU. Can someone please give me some guidance since I don't know anything about computers.

My current setup is:

Processor: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core 3.5 GHz (4.1 GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W
GPU: MSI Radeon R7 370 DirectX 12 R7 370 2GD5T OC 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 (rev. 6.0) AM3+ AMD 760G + SB710 USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper T2 - Compact CPU Cooler with Dual Looped Direct Contact Heatpipes
Memory: WD Blue 1TB Desktop Hard Disk Drive
Power supply: CORSAIR CX series CX500 500W 80 PLUS BRONZE Active PFC ATX12V & EPS12V Power Supply

Thank you for your time!!!!!

I have basically the same exact set-up as this and have been trying to stream H1Z1 without success. I don't know how to VCE with OBS as everywhere I have searched suggests that can't be done. Any help on settings would be great.

@Mistakes Base on the amount of research I have done upgrading the CPU to the FX-8350 wouldn't help much. I'm not an expert by any means but the way this was explained to me is that the cores run at 3.5ghz for both CPUs, therefore if the program only uses 1 core to operate there will be no difference in performance. I was suggested to go the 2 PC route but don't have any budget to upgrade my current PC or build a second one all together.

Any help with settings would be awesome!

VCE is actually pretty easy to set up if you have the same setup as mine. If you have a better graphics card then it would be even better for you! Here is the "guide/instructions" that I followed to set up my VCE: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/obs-branch-with-amd-vce-support.13996/.

Before I setup VCE, my stream would look decent but my in-game setting would all need to be on LOW and sometimes it would have FPS lag. But normally it's around 45-60FPS but then it lags it drops to 15-20 FPS which is unplayable for Overwatch.
After I setup VCE, my in-game performance would be constant 100-120 FPS and sometimes it would drop to 60-75 but you can't even tell much difference when it drops. However, because VCE, the stream quality is a lot lower now because it takes twice the kbitrate to even have close to the same quality as streaming from your CPU. So if you want a decent stream with VCE, you will need above average internet speed.

But, I'm not an expert on computer or VCE so I could be wrong. This is just my personal experience with/without using VCE.

I'm thinking upgrading my RAM to 16GB but I'm not sure if that would make a difference.

Thanks man, I have the same video card as well but I will give it a try. I have super high internet speeds so bitrate isn't an issue although I know twitch limits your bit rate either way. I also have an extra 8gb ram sitting around and might just install it in my PC, nothing to lose. Thanks for the reply and the link, will try it out as soon as I get home. :)

Awesome, please update if you see any difference by installing the extra 8gb of ram. If you manage to make it work can you send me your OBS settings and see if I can do the same. Thank you!

Upgrading the RAM has absolutely no benefit at all.
I assumed it wouldn't but I do have the 8gb lying around. Might as well install it. I will have to try lowering my settings. Someone told me I could assign OBS to a particular processor core so that it uses a different one than the game is using, not sure how valid this is.

The search continues!

Games Like Overwatch are quite hard to stream on an FX6300 I wouldnt suggest going over 720p30

A bare minimum is always an Intel i5 for 720p30 and in certain Games even 720p60 everything on veryfast Preset though.

If you really care about streaming there is no way around an i7

I don't want to stream overwatch , just H1Z1. I built my PC to stream Ps4 through capture card and it works wonderfully. I recently started playing H1 and it's the only PC game I have ever played and was hoping that I could find some way to stream it to my viewers. I don't see the merit in investing for a ne MB and CPU just to stream 1 game.

Thats why I usually suggest to rethink Budgets from the getgo on sites like https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcforme/new/ then again h1z1 is kinda picky on the CPU and I would say that 720p30 on veryfast Preset is still doable on your fx 6300 with lowered ingame Settings.
