Question / Help What resolution monitor should I buy? (easy question)

Hi guys..

See end/bottom of post for a TL;DR :)

This question should be fairly easy for you guru's out there.

Basically here's the deal. I run a free, 24/7, 365 days a year Stream to Justin.tv -- I've done my best to have my 1200 Video playlist be 720p resolution files -- (some are 1080p) -- but let's say half are 720p.. and 20% are 360p (which IIRC is a 16:9 ratio).. then there are less than 1 percent that are older 4:3 ratios that I know nothing can be done about without distorting the image.

The basic question is what resolution monitor should I purchase to serve as JUST a monitor that will output Video files from VLC (media player) that OBS will "monitor capture" in full screen. This monitor will JUST be a monitor to have the perfect ratio Justin.tv prefers to 100% fill the video box the users watching the stream will see.

I currently have the stream running on a dying server with a monitor with a native resolution of 1366x768 -- Which I don't know quite what aspect ratio it is.. I know it's CLOSE to 16:9 -- but it does have some issues with slight letterboxing on 16:9 videos..

Using a calculator -- 1366/768 = 1.778645833

Again with Calculator -- 1920x1080 = 1.777777778

Thus 16:9 = 1.777777778
and 16:10 = 1.6

Not trying to get pedantic and confusing here --

My assumption is I should get the absolute CHEAPEST 1920x1080 monitor of ANY size I can find -- since 1920x1080 = 16:9

I am building a completely new server for this stream,.. and the monitor will be , again, just to make OBS capture it with the best aspect ratio at full screen that matches with Justin.tv properly. Again, my current 1366x768 monitor is DAMN close but not quite, and if any suggest I just keep the 1366x768 monitor that is not a possibility as it is dying with the server..

So, basically what *native* resolution monitor should I purchase? 1920x1080 seems common and easy to find.

I only ask to confirm this, and maybe you guys can add something to this.. like oh, I don't know.. that buying some 1280x720 monitor has some advantage in broadcasting .. or some other different resolution.

I've looked around and with the sales going on.. I can grab a new, albeit somewhat low end, 1920x1080 monitor for $50-70 shipped, which is justifiable money for me to spend as a monitor for the stream alone,.. it won't be serving any other duty but as an 'output' monitor for OBS to capture for Justin.tv.

TL:DR - I'm streaming 24/7 to Justin.tv and am looking to buy a monitor that has the best native resolution to match with what JTV uses (I think is 16:9) -- what native resolution monitor do you recommend? (I will be buying a Sub $100 monitor due to it's purpose).

Thanks for any input/advice,

If your stream its runing 1280x720p buy a screen with that resolution and your viewers will watch true 720p wich will be better than 1080p downscale to 720p. Othetwise the 1080p its very common for gamers however a lot of people still have 16:10 screens like laptops and stuff so 720 its the most viable hd.

Yes I would go with a 1920x1080.

Thanks..

The next post says to go with a 1280x720 monitor -- I've looked around, and monitors with native 1280x720 resolutions are not that easy to find.

You say (not you neski) -- that running 1920x1080 and when videos are running at 720p reso's.. that it will effect performance?

To me it seems like if it's 16:9, that 1920x1080 shouldn't make any performance degradation.. when VLC is playing 720p videos. If there is some negative side to a native 1920x1080 monitor with 720p videos .. mind expanding on that?

From availability of monitors and pricing.. it looks like 1920x1080 is really all I'm going to find at the cheap price point I'm looking at .. and not a native "1280x720" monitor.

Cheapest I have found right now from a reputable site.. is $89 shipped for a 22inch 1920x1080 monitor..

No, don't get a 1280x720 monitor. That is absurd advice. Get a 1920x1080 monitor, which can downscale in OBS to 720p just fine.
