Question / Help What kind of HDD needed for lossless gameplay recording?

Hi guys,

I plan on building a white gaming/recording pc. I want to record lossless, render lossles, put into handbrake to reduce fie size while trying to maintain max quality and then upload it to youtube.

I know that I need a good PC to do so. I've been told that the HDD doesn't really matter that much since x264 encoding mainly relies on the CPU. So does it indeed not matter how much write speed my HDD will have? What about rpm?

Because if write speed and rpm don't matter, I can get more storage for cheaper...
currently I plan on buying a 6TB seagate HDD.

Any help would be appreciated!

Use OBS Studio and select Lossless Quality as recording presets.
Videos will take up to 7 GB per minute, which can result in 100 to 120 MByte per second.

Thanks, but does rpm have anything do do with this? So will i get the same results with a slower rpm but equal write speeds?

RPM does not matter as long as the constant write speed is fast enough. And 120 is on the upper limit of HDDs.
You are more likely to work with the "Indistinguishable Quality" preset which is using high enough bitrates to eleminate any compression artifacts without the impact of lossless file sizes.

A big one.

Editing your videos in most NLEs is going to be a huge PITA, unless all you do is cut on keyframes or something. Which doesn't make sense given your obsession for quality. Been through this before back when all we had was FRAPS, and it isn't pleasant. I would expect any modern desktop hard drive to be able to keep up with 1080p60 though. If not, get an SSD and transfer to a big slow drive after each gaming session.
