Weird audio capture noises in Linux?

I just installed OBS on Linux, now my mic is making a weird gargling/static sound. I tried noise suppression but that only changes the sound.

This is a fresh install of OBS with no plug-ins

Sounds to me like compression artifacts, possibly acting on noise. What are those settings?

And what does, say, Audacity sound like, to record the same mic and save it as WAV?

By the way, Noise Suppression only does so much. Nothing is magic. If you have a rock concert worth of electronic noise, then I can understand it not fixing anything.
