Web Cams

I have a Sony Handyman HDR-CX405 video camera, and I purchased one of those video capture devices from amazon to connect my video cam to my laptop. I have two cheap plug and play cams and I have no problem with them, however, when I tried connecting my sony using the video capture device, (because that's what I was told it takes,) OBS shows the cam selection, but when I choose it all I get is a black screen from the Sony camera. I can switch to the cam on my laptop or either of my cheap plug-and-play cam's and they work just fine.
I suppose my question is, what am I doing wrong?
I would like to mention, Is the HD Video Capture Device supposed to get hot? When I plug it into the USB port it starts getting hot. I have tried all three ports, and the same thing happens.
Why isn't it working as a webcam? I have it connected through the HD Video Capture Device.
Any Suggestions?

First, I'd suggest plugging the camera into a TV with an HDMI input to make sure it's actually sending a signal.
If it is, post a screenshot of the Properties for the video capture device source you're using, with the capture device selected and everything plugged in and turned on.

If it's one of the cheap ~$20 USB HDMI video capture units, be aware that they are very cheap, and the QA processes are not necessarily good. Entirely possible you just got a broken-from-the-factory one, especially with it getting hot. Warm, sure. Hot to the point it might burn you? No, that's not normal, and could be an internal short or failed chip somewhere.

I tried connecting it to my T.V. and I got nothing
Perhaps I've either a bad HDMI port on my camera or, maybe there is a special setting that needs to be set in the camera itself.

Thank you #FerretBomb
