Warning - newbie question - audio recording

I am trying to convert a number of DV tapes (from a Canon video camera) into a digital format.

I am connecting in to OBS using a "usb 3 capture card" which works fine for the video, but I don't seem to be capturing the audio from this source.

Adobe Premiere Essentials records both but seems to stop after about three minutes.

Can somebody point me to the "idiot switch" that I have missed on OBS please.

So you use this usb 3 capture card as import and then you use Adobe Premiere Essentials for recording? Why and how is OBS Studio involved in this?
 
Good evening.

My first attempts were with Premiere and then I left that alone and went to OBS (solely). I mentioned Premiere to highlight that audio was recorded on the connection/device.

My current situation is trying to record video and audio via OBS on its own, Premiere is not involved unless I am told that it needs to be..

DV is already digital media. If you go through an analog output of your camera and re-digitize via a capture device, you will lose much quality.
If possible, try to find a digital transfer method. May be your camera has already a USB connector and comes with software that can copy a tape to the PC.
If you really care about your recordings, finding alternative used cameras on eBay that comes with USB might help (they're cheap).

Thanks, that makes sense Koala. It is a Canon HV20 and has a USB port, but connecting it up to USB on my pc does not appear to add anything to devices.

An interesting idea about eBay, I will go and take a look if the Canon isn't going to be the right vehicle for this job. Any recommendations as to makes/models worth looking for?

Oder USB media devices often need custom software (driver and app). I googled for "Canon HV20 USB" and it seems Canon still supports this device up to now with software, manual and drivers:

(I don't know if it will appear in English for you - if it is in German for you and you need English, navigate to www.canon.com and search support for software and driver download for your camera model)

In case you actually manage the download of a dv video to your PC, your next step is to convert it to a standard video format (dv is legacy). You can use a software like Handbrake for converting. If you need a simple tool to cut your videos into snippets, try avidemux (it can also recode) or the Video Editor app that comes with Windows 10.

Koala, checking across the web and the usb port seems to only work on the still photos that the Canon HV20 camera can take. The firewire takes video across only, no audio.
 
Ooops, I jumped a message of yours, thanks for the pointers. I will explore.

I looked at the UK page earlier and downloaded the utils but they wont run if a camera is not detected. I am going to try on a second pc.
 
In the meantime, can anyone help me to get audio into the recording please. I know that audio is coming from the Canon HV20 as Premiere records it, so I am probably missing an "idiot switch" in obs.
