VLC source

I'm very much a novice OBS user and hope I'm not time wasting with this post. I see that VLC can be specified as a source in OBS. Currently I have a basic use of OBS to display record a VLC Direct X window on my second display monitor in which I'm playing a video and applying real time VLC video effects in order to get a video with the effects applied. (VLC won't record applied effects only the original video.)

My question is can I achieve this more easily by selecting VLC as a source and not my second monitor. I'm struggling to understand the advice and instructions on using VLC as a source, don't need playlists etc. The instructions seem to imply that by selecting VLC as a source I'll just be using OBS as a video player.

The VLC source within OBS is just an alternative version of the integrated media source. It uses the VLC dll files to provide enhanced functionality such as a playlist of files, audio track selection and better support of remote sources.

It doesn't connect to some externally running VLC process. It's always independent and doesn't use any configuration option of the standalone VLC player. It will always display any media within the OBS preview.
